The Ohio State University Office of Library User Education will be
demonstrating the newest version of The Gateway to Information project at the
Apple Computer booth during ALA on Sunday, June 28 from 9am - 1pm
The Gateway is Ohio State's attempt to make independent information users
out of all library patrons, even those with little or no computer or research
experience. The Gateway helps them identify, locate, access, and evaluate
relevant resources, regardless of format, including the OSU online catalog and
19 CD-ROM databases---all from one workstation.
A common search front end and display screen has been created for The
Gateway so each CD-ROM and online catalog looks and searches like any other,
whether they are from Wilson, SilverPlatter, UMI, or Grolier.
The Gateway leads patrons to hundreds of encyclopedias, periodical
indexes, dictionaries, statistical and review sources, all with descriptive
abstracts, call numbers, dates, and locations. In addition, patrons can view
and print campus maps and library floorplans, or evaluate materials through
citation indexes, author biographies, and book / journal review sources.
For those who have not seen The Gateway recently, please stop by and take a
look on Sunday. Information about the project will be available, and I will
try to answer any questions you might have.
