Subject: info on Dynix
I have been participating in an exchange program with a university in Mexico.
The University is starting to investigate the automation of its libraries. I
had offered to send out a message over Internet on its behalf requesting
information on your experiences with the Dynix system. Dynix has somewhat of a
presence in Mexico and thus is under consideration by the University. The
University is not on the Internet yet so I have offered to compile the
responses and pass them on.
Looking forward to receiving those messages from you which you care to share
with our neighbors,

Thanks for your help.
P.S. Please respond directly to me and don't answer this message after June
30, as I will be at a different Internet address.

Subject: Any experience with WAIS and card catalog ?
I need to develop a card catalog kind of system, and I was
looking at WAIS to implement it.
The way I was looking to doing it was indexing the text based
on the Subject, Author, etc. fields and creating several sources
based on this indexing. The frontend to this would simply decide
which sources to query based on the user's query.
Anyone have any input on this ? Any public domain implementations
out there that might give me a good starting point ?
Please respond directly via email (also).

Subject: subject headings from multiple thesauri in OPACs
Our library is migrating to a second generation automation system (Geac
Advance) which will include authority control, and we are working on how to
handle subject headings from multiple thesauri. The authority control
system is designed to handle subject headings from one thesaurus, providing
online references in one cross-reference structure. To the best of my
knowledge, all systems currently on the market do so; none have true
multi-thesauri capability. Our database contains primarily Library of
Congress (LC) headings, but many records also have National Library of
Medicine (NLM) headings, and we expect to be loading records from the
Department of Energy with Energy Data Base (EDB) subject headings.
An approach we have considered for NLM headings is to include NLM headings
in the subject keyword index but not in the phrase indexes, where they
would display in browse lists intermingled with LC headings. The system
gives us the flexibility to specify this treatment for 650 _2 tags.
However, at this point the authority control system will process all 650
tags the same, regardless of indicator, giving the 650 _2 tags at least
provisional authority records. These would then display in heading browse
screens in the OPAC, conflicting with the LCSH cross-references and
creating terrible confusion for users.
EDB headings will be coded 650 _7 with subfield $2EDB, and will also need
special handling to avoid mix-ups with the LCSH subject authority
structure. If loaded into a separate database, they could theoretically be
put under authority control with their own EDB authority system, providing
OPAC cross-references. However since the EDB thesaurus isn't available in
MARC authority format, the authority file would have to be created
manually, probably using provisional authority records created during the
loading of bib records, and keying in the cross-references.
How are other libraries handling these problems? Anyone doing copy
cataloging in RLIN or OCLC will be pulling up records with both LC and NLM
headings, several libraries are testing EDB records, and many have or are
installing authority control systems, so I believe this is an issue of
general concern.
I would appreciate any experience, recommendations, or even ideas for the
future you might have. Please respond to me or to the list; I will
summarize direct responses for the list. Thank you for any contributions.
Specific questions are:
1. If you are getting records from a utility which has both LC, NLM, and
sometimes other headings, do you download all the headings to your local
system?
Do you index everything you download?
2. LC and NLM thesauri have a lot of overlap. How helpful is it to users
to make both available for searching?
3. If you have several types of headings showing in the OPAC, are they
labeled in the screen displays to indicate which thesaurus they come from?
4. Do you index some headings in only the keyword indexes and not the
phrase search indexes?
5. Do you have authority records for non-LC headings? Are they linked to
the bibliographic records? Do they put cross-references in the OPAC?
6. Do you have headings from other thesauri coded in 650 _7 subfield2, and
how are they handled?

Subject: OPAC Guide
We are revising our OPAC guide. For some reason this guide provokes
more "sound and fury" than any of our other guides - I don't know
whether this is true elsewhere?
We would be very grateful to be pointed towards any collections of
other people's OPAC guides or to receive copies (these can be in
paper or electronic form - whichever is more convenient.)

Subject: Tn3270
Our telnet protocol does not recognize TN3270 command because
Ultrix Connection TCP/IP software does not support tn3270. Using
"telnet /notn3270 address.name.org", as suggested by someone, is
not working either. I have several remote host addresses that
use "tn3270" instead of "telnet". Is there a way to get around
this problem in a VAX system environment?
