ST. MARY'S COLLEGE, MORAGA, CALIFORNIA
POSITION: Reference Manager Librarian
REPORTS TO: Library Director
SUPERVISES: 1.0 FTE Access Services Librarian (Classification 11)
.5 FTE Library Secretary
1.0 FTE Circulation Supervisor (day)
.5 FTE Circulation Clerk (night)
1.0 FTE ILL Clerk/Assistant
3.0 FTE Student Staff
Also functionally supervises reference librarians
DUTIES: The Reference Manager librarian position is responsible for the
administration and management of Reference, Access (circulation,
reserves, interlibrary loan), and community relations
(publications, publicity, exhibits, events), supervising a
professional and support staff of 4 FTE. The Reference Manager is
part of the library's management team--comprised of the librarian
managers for Technical Services, Systems, Instruction, Reference,
and Media Services. This position works closely with all
managers, particularly Instruction and Systems, and with the
Collection Development Coordinator. Departmental planning,
budgeting, service evaluation, and personnel are essential
elements to the position. Responsibilities include participation
in reference, collection development, and instruction. Provides
leadership in the identification of needs and setting of
priorities; contributes to professional development and growth of
staff. The position will also participate in the selection and
implementation of an online public access catalog (OPAC) and
automated circulation system.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- development and maintenance of 10,000 volume reference collection
- define reference services appropriate to clientele of Saint Mary's
College Library and develop plans to deliver service
- develop and coordinate reference staffing requirements
- participate in reference, collection development, and instruction
- evaluate, coordinate, and manage development of policies on
reference service hours and services
- evaluate services; define and implement statistics gathering and
reports
- develop and implement appropriate publicity efforts
- participate in the planning and implementation of an online public
access catalog and automated circulation system
QUALIFICATIONS:
- ALA accredited masters degree
- 8 years professional library experience with a minimum 5 years in
an academic library
- two years administrative/management experience in public service
area; successful supervisory experience
- demonstrated experience with electronic information services,
e.g., CD-ROMS, networks, automated library systems
- demonstrated interest in contribution to the institution and
profession
- works effectively with faculty and administrators
- effective communicator (written, interpersonal)
- evidence of a strong service orientation and ability to work well
in a dynamic, and changing environment
- demonstrate willingness to accept full responsibilities of a
middle management position in a participatory organization
SALARY: $35,075/yr.
Health, dental, vision and life insurance; generous vacation,
holiday and leave policy. TIAA-CREF retirement program after one
year of service and age 21; immediately if TIAA-CREF annuities
already owned.

Saint Mary's College is a medium sized, comprehensive institution of higher
education dedicated to three great traditions--Catholic, Liberal Arts, and
Lasallian. The college is located 20 miles east of San Francisco.
The library serves over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, both on and
off campus, enrolled in programs offered in the liberal arts, science,
economics and business administration, extended education, and intercollegiate
nursing. The collection size is 166,000 with over 1,000 current periodical
subscriptions. The library and media staff includes nine librarians, 8
support staff, and approximately four FTE students. The library has begun a
library automation project and is planning for the implementation of an online
public access system and automated circulation system targeted for 1993.
