Wow, here are a few radical ideas:
1) Maybe some, or even most, of our patrons want, expect, and support us for
having a variety of resources in our libraries, even poor ol' books. 2) Not
everything is in electronic form yet and much of it may never be, despite the
efforts of Project Gutenburg and others. This does not mean it is not valuable
and important. Not everybody has the MTV view that current culture and forms
are the only ones of value. Libraries offer people a choice.
3) Not everyone is computer literate yet and, hold on to your lockdown cables,
folks, even some real electro whizzes actually like books. I like print, av,
AND electronic resources. I even like most of the people I meet. Golly gee
whillikers, how did I ever end up working in a library, of all places?
4) As others have pointed out, different libraries have different goals and
purposes vis-a-vis access and preservation and different library users have
different levels of sophistication and needs.
5) We're all part of a vast and intricate web: libraries AND computer centers,
print AND electronic, generalists AND specialists. OR diminishes us all. Let's
work together.
