We are trying to catalogue the Oxford DaTabase of Perinatal Trials. THe
actually database has been loaded onto the hard drive of one of our CD-Rom
stations and is availabe through a menu when the user sits at that statiion.
We have used some of the aacr II cataloguing rules for some parts of the
record but we are having a few dificulties. In our collection generally
we do not have a call number for our periodical fields but the 090 field
lists them as UNCLASS which displays in our online catalgue. (We hope
to change this with our new catalogue). For our CD-ROM subscriptions
we put CD-ROM in the 090 field. But as this database is not really a
CD-ROM, we shouldnt really put that there. At this point it has a call
number but as there is no shelf location, that doesnt make sense either.
I know that call numbers provide more that shlef location but that is
hard to explain to a user who is looking for it. It is even harder to
explain when the reference desk is closed and there is not a librarian
to explain it. So WHat I need to know is anyone cataloguing computer
type indexes that are basically housed on micro-computers and how
are they doing it? Specifically, how are they handling the edition
statements, and the 300 and 090 fileds. We are especially interested
in hearing if anyone else has catalogued the Oxford Database of Perinatal
Trials.

Subject: COMPU-LENZ
I would appreciate hearing from any library using a product called
COMPU-LENZ magnification screen for their online catalog or other
computer(s). The COMPU-LENZ is a fresnel magnification screen which
doubles the size of characters on the computer monitor. I am particularly
interested in finding out if the lens is used on one computer, or, since
it is fairly portable, if readers are permitted to use on a variety of
monitors. Thanks in advance for any information. Please respond directly
to me.

We have been using the Virtual Microsystems product (which
incidentally can use either a Meridian Tower or an Infoserver)
for the better part of a year. We are quite happy with it ---
if you have any further questions, you can send me e-mail or
call me at (518) 387-7538.
Incidentally, in addition to Virtual and Logicraft, there is
also a product put out by Gandalf (which was reviewed a year
or two ago in OCLC Micro.)
