The paper-indexes-are-better-than-electronic-indexes turn this discussion
has taken harkens back to the card-catalogs-are-more-browsable-than-online-
catalogs debate of 15 years ago. Have we really forgotten so quickly?
Remember all those studies of the card catalog that indicated that an
overwhelming proportion of searches were author/title? Well, now it

appears that some large portion of those were actually subject searches
"disguised" as author/title searches and, even more importantly, that
people searched the way they did in the card catalog because of the
kinds of limitations the technology imposed, not because that's the
way they wanted to! This isn't anything new. Everytime a new
information technology comes along, a vocal minority laments the demise
of the old, and probably for good reasons. Electronic "indexing" has
incredible potential, but it will only be as good as those who practice
it ....

Bravo, Cliff Urr! What a wonderful summation of the need for indexing in
the print and electronic environments.

Subject: Electronic Documents

I recently received an advertisement for a monthly publication called
"Electronic Documents." The only reason I mention this is that this
publication appears to be available in print (on paper) only.
