massive fold-out family trees with approximately 50,000 names (!) It
details families who first arrived in North America prior to 1840, and
follows those families (Jewish and Non-Jewish)! When it first appeared
in 1960, the book =E2=80=9Cmarked a milestone in the study of American=

Grandees. An archivist at one of America's oldest Synagogues has
declared, "We own the hardback edition that goes up to 1977 and we use
it constantly. It consists entirely of family trees of every family of
Jewish origin that came to America before 1840 (including Non-Jewish
descendants). Every name is indexed in the back and there are
cross-references when a name appears in more than one tree. Included
with the names are places and dates of birth, marriage, death, and
immigration." Stern, the compiler, was a rabbi, synagogue musician,
historian and genealogist of early American Jewry. He was the
grandnephew of Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf. He served as a chaplain in the
U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1950 he became the
official genealogist for the American Jewish Archives (Korn, EJ) . The
book is now, unfortunately, out of print, though demand for it

the Kingdom of Poland is one of three major works by Dr. Alexander
Beider in the realm of Eastern European Jewish surnames. His other
works, A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Russian Empire and A
Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from Galicia established Dr. Beider as a
leading authority on Eastern European Ashkenazic names. A Dictionary of
Jewish Surnames from the Kingdom of Poland is compilation of more than
32, 000 Jewish surnames with origins in that part of the Russian Empire
known as the =E2=80=98Kingdom of Poland. =E2=80=99 The book provides in=
formation on (1)
where within the Kingdom of Poland the name was prevalent at the turn
of the 20th century, (2) all likely etymologies of the name, and (3)
spelling variants and derivatives of the name. A soundex index makes it
simpler to locate a given surname with its proper Polish spelling. The
introductory portion of the book describes the origins and evolution of
Polish-Jewish surnames. The Introductory portion of the book follows
Dr. Beider's scholarly style in analyzing the origin and evolution of
Jewish surnames from that region. This includes a history of Jewish
names in the Kingdom of Poland, basic etymological analysis, spelling
and variation of surnames and analysis of surnames in various provinces

shetls and towns, this book effectively puts to rest the once
widely-held belief that virtually all documents pertaining to Jews in
these countries had been destroyed during the Holocaust. These archives
became accessible to the public for genealogy research only after
Ukraine and Moldova declared independence in 1991. Here, listed for the
first time in English, are precise inventories of the vast Jewish
materials in the archives of Ukraine and Moldova, presented with the
full cooperation and blessings of Ukrainian and Moldovan archivists. Of
extraordinary value for Jewish genealogists, Jewish Roots in Ukraine
and Moldova is also a superlative travel guide, with 1, 200
photographs, maps, and document examples, including many rare antique
postcards. The chapters on towns and cities highlight 189 places in
Ukraine and Moldova. They include such important Jewish centers as
Kiev, Lvov, Odessa, and Kishinev; and lesser-known places such as
Shepetovka, Sudilkov, Soroki and Priluki. The sections entitled "The
People and the Places" and "Town Clips" offer many more photographs of
Jewish life, past and present. The Holocaust chapter includes poignant
photographs of memorials to the victims of the Nazis in cities, towns
and villages all over Ukraine and Moldova, along with detailed maps and
accompanying text. Some photographs are pre-World War I, and some were
taken just a few months prior to publication. More than 900 of the
photographs are in full color, as are all 20 maps. Along with the
reproductions of Jewish documents and family records, Jewish Roots in
Ukraine and Moldova, like its predecessor volume, Jewish Roots in
Poland, is an exceptional resource as well as a poignant memorial album
of unsurpassed quality and stunning visual impact. =E2=80=9D (Publisher=

Jewish record searching and other resources to assist genealogists in
tracing their Jewish Galician roots. Such resources include archival
collections of Jewish vital and other records; geographic, visual and

about travel and research in specific towns by members of Gesher

directs you to: addresses of archives, researchers and translators;
organizations that hold important resource information; and travel
agencies that can assist with organizing individual and group travel to

communities where Jews lived in the 1870s and the administrative
districts of each community. The inclusion of this valuable resource is
designed to aide readers in identifying their place of origin and

ils families who first arrived in North America prior to 1840, and follows=
those families (Jewish and Non-Jewish)! When it first appeared in 1960, t=
he book “marked a milestone in the study of American Jewish genealog=

source for Stephen Birmingham’s best-selling book The Grandees. An=

It consists entirely of family trees of every family of Jewish origin tha=

LDOVA: PAGES FROM THE PAST AND ARCHIVAL INVENTORIES. New York; YIVO Instit=
ute For Jewish Research, 1999. Publishers cloth. 4to. XX, 600 pages. 29 cm=
=2E First edition. Published by YIVO in conjunction with the Miriam Weiner R=
outes to Roots Foundation. “With its archival inventories representi=
ng 1, 400 shetls and towns, this book effectively puts to rest the once wi=
dely-held belief that virtually all documents pertaining to Jews in these=
countries had been destroyed during the Holocaust. These archives became=
accessible to the public for genealogy research only after Ukraine and Mo=
ldova declared independence in 1991. Here, listed for the first time in En=
glish, are precise inventories of the vast Jewish materials in the archive=
s of Ukraine and Moldova, presented with the full cooperation and blessing=
s of Ukrainian and Moldovan archivists. Of extraordinary value for Jewish=
genealogists, Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldova is also a superlative t=
ravel guide, with 1, 200 photographs, maps, and document examples, includi=
ng many rare antique postcards. The chapters on towns and cities highlight=
189 places in Ukraine and Moldova. They include such important Jewish cen=
ters as Kiev, Lvov, Odessa, and Kishinev; and lesser-known places such as=
Shepetovka, Sudilkov, Soroki and Priluki. The sections entitled "The=
People and the Places" and "Town Clips" offer many more ph=
otographs of Jewish life, past and present. The Holocaust chapter includes=
poignant photographs of memorials to the victims of the Nazis in cities,=
towns and villages all over Ukraine and Moldova, along with detailed maps=
and accompanying text. Some photographs are pre-World War I, and some wer=
e taken just a few months prior to publication. More than 900 of the photo=
graphs are in full color, as are all 20 maps. Along with the reproductions=
of Jewish documents and family records, Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldo=
va, like its predecessor volume, Jewish Roots in Poland, is an exceptional=
resource as well as a poignant memorial album of unsurpassed quality and=
stunning visual impact. ” (Publishers description) Subjects: Jews -=
