Aires;
Liga Argentina Por Los Derechos Del Hombre, 1983. Paper Wrappers. 8vo.
20 pages. 22 cm. First Edition. In Spanish, with some Yiddish. In
Memory of the Rosenbergs is a pamphlet devoted to preserving the memory
of the fate of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. It was published by the
"Filial Rosenberg" (Rosenberg Section) of the "Liga Argentina por los
Derechos del Hombre" (Argentina League for the Rights of Man), in 1983,
the year the Dictatorship's Dirty War in Argentina was officially
declared over. The Argentina League for the Rights of Man was founded
in the 1930's as a left-wing composite of lawyers and activists opposed
to political repression and dictatorship, and, though an illegal
organization for decades, was instrumental in bringing about
commissions of truth and testimony on the disappearances of the
dictatorship era. This pamphlet contains a beautiful illustration of
the Rosenbergs embraced on the front cover, and a series of historical
vignettes about the life, arrest, repression, trial, execution, and the
demonstrations of international solidarity with the accused from around
the world. This pamphlet was written as both a memoriam for the
Rosenbergs, and as a document setting out a history of a previous
instance of a state terror in the guise of democracy executing
political enemies, so as to better demonstrate the necessity for
testimony and commissions in the present (that of testimony of the
families of the Disappeared). Includes poems by the Rosenbergs
themselves, a poem by Rachel Alperovich, a translation from a Yiddish
newspaper declaring the need for human rights, and a few b/w photograph
reproductions throughout. With a laid-in 4 page pamphlet, of an earlier
printing, on the subject of the innocence of the Rosenberg's and about
their execution, written by Michael and Robert Meerpol, the sons of the
Rosenbergs. OCLC lists no copies worldwide. Slightly yellowed pages.

a
University Press, New York 1960. Cloth, 8vo. 225 pages. Frontispiece
portrait of Isaac Aboab da Fonseca. Controversial work in which Arnold
Wiznitzer wrote that Jews "dominated the slave trade" in Brazil in the
mid-17th century. Wiznitzer's statement was subsequently quoted in
antisemitic literature, but sometimes taken out of context so it seemed
to apply to the entire Atlantic slave trade. Many of the ethnic Jews in
the New World, particularly in Brazil, were New Christians or
Conversos, some of which continued to practice Judaism, so the
distinction between Jewish and non-Jewish slave owners is a difficult
distinction for scholars to make. Drawing heavily upon original
documents in many early repositories, Dr. Wiznitzer reveals in this
book a long neglected aspect of Latin-American history. This work is
profusely illustrated with numerous b/w photographic reproductions of
documents. Ex-library with usual marks, otherwise Very Good Condition.

tensions inherent in the political process in Chile, the presence of
Nazi ideology in some cities, as well as the contributions which Jews
began to make to their new homeland. It includes a series of

Jewish writer. Alpersohn was born in Kamenets-Podolski, Russia. His
father, Israel, was a shohet and melamed. In his youth Alpersohn was a
maskil, writing Hebrew articles in the Jewish press. In 1891 he
emigrated to Argentina and settled in Colonia Mauricio, the first
agricultural colony founded by the Jewish Colonization Association
(ICA) . From the very outset he wrote pamphlets in Yiddish under a
pseudonym criticizing the ICA administration. After 43 years in
Mauricio, he began to spend winters in Buenos Aires but remained on his
farm during the summer. Alpersohn was a prolific writer. In his three
volumes of memoirs ("The ICA and Its 30 Years of Colonization in
Argentina") , novels, plays, stories, and newspaper articles, he
described with much color the life of the Jewish farmers in the ICA
colonies. He is considered one of the outstanding Yiddish writers of

ANIVERSARIO DE LA EMPRESA TEATRO "SOLEIL." Buenos Aires, 1951. Paper
Wrappers, 8vo, 194, vi pages. Includes photos & ads. The Daily Forward
noted in 1953: "There are currently two active Yiddish theaters in
Buenos Aires, the Excelsior and the Soleil, both located on La Calle
Corrientes, the Second Avenue of South America. Yiddish theater here is
in the same situation as in New York: Producers have all but
disappeared, and the business has fallen on the shoulders of the
actors. But one difference is that in Buenos Aires they depend on big
names from abroad, like Pesach'ke Burstein and Lillian Lux, to bring in
the audience. Also, their season only lasts about six months.
Interestingly, the Yiddish theater in Buenos Aires doesn't use a box
office to sell tickets. Instead, the actors and their friends go from
house to house in the Jewish neighborhoods selling tickets. This
tradition hearkens back to the early days of Yiddish theater in
Argentina, when the actors needed to be sure of getting an audience."

an illegal organization for decades, was instrumental in bringing about c=
ommissions of truth and testimony on the disappearances of the dictatorshi=

mbraced on the front cover, and a series of historical vignettes about the=
life, arrest, repression, trial, execution, and the demonstrations of int=

44. • Wiznitzer, Arnold. JEWS IN=
COLONIAL BRAZIL. Columbia University Press, New York 1960. Cloth, 8vo. 22=
5 pages. Frontispiece portrait of Isaac Aboab da Fonseca. Controversial wo=
rk in which Arnold Wiznitzer wrote that Jews "dominated the slave tra=
de" in Brazil in the mid-17th century. Wiznitzer's statement was=
subsequently quoted in antisemitic literature, but sometimes taken out of=
context so it seemed to apply to the entire Atlantic slave trade. Many of=
the ethnic Jews in the New World, particularly in Brazil, were New Christ=
ians or Conversos, some of which continued to practice Judaism, so the dis=
tinction between Jewish and non-Jewish slave owners is a difficult distinc=
tion for scholars to make. Drawing heavily upon original documents in many=
early repositories, Dr. Wiznitzer reveals in this book a long neglected a=
spect of Latin-American history. This work is profusely illustrated with n=
umerous b/w photographic reproductions of documents. Ex-library with usual=
marks, otherwise Very Good Condition. (LATAM1-46) $55.00.
tly two active Yiddish theaters in Buenos Aires, the Excelsior and the Sol=
eil, both located on La Calle Corrientes, the Second Avenue of South Ameri=
ca. Yiddish theater here is in the same situation as in New York: Producer=
s have all but disappeared, and the business has fallen on the shoulders o=
f the actors. But one difference is that in Buenos Aires they depend on bi=
g names from abroad, like Pesach'ke Burstein and Lillian Lux, to bring=
in the audience. Also, their season only lasts about six months. Interest=
ingly, the Yiddish theater in Buenos Aires doesn't use a box office to=
sell tickets. Instead, the actors and their friends go from house to hous=
e in the Jewish neighborhoods selling tickets. This tradition hearkens bac=
k to the early days of Yiddish theater in Argentina, when the actors neede=
d to be sure of getting an audience." Good Condition. $55.00
