Third Workshop on "Very Large Digital Libraries"

*** Apologies for cross-posting ***

******************************************************************
Third Workshop on "Very Large Digital Libraries"
Glasgow, United Kingdom, September 10, 2010
http://www.delos.info/vldl2010 ( mailto:vldl2010@isti.cnr.it)
In connection with ECDL 2010 ( http://www.ecdl2010.org)
*******************************************************************

Workshop Objectives=20
The implementation of modern Digital Libraries is more demanding than in =
the past. Information consumers are facing with the need to access ever =
growing, heterogeneous, possibly federated Information Spaces while =
information providers are interested in satisfying such needs by sharing =
rich and organised views over their information deluge. Because of their =
fundamental role of information production and dissemination vehicle, =
Digital Libraries are also expected to provide information society with =
functionality and services that must be available 24/7 and guarantee the =
expected quality of service. This scenario leads to the development of =
Very Large Digital Libraries, which are =93very large=94 in terms of the =
number of information objects and collections to be made available, =
users to be served and potentially distributed functionality/content =
resources needed to construct them. Research on VLDLs opens up novel and =
actual scenarios, where researchers have to confront with new =
foundational and system design challenges in a context having =
scalability, interoperability and sustainability as focal points. =
Authors and participants of the past editions of Very Large Digital =
Library Workshop, respectively at ECDL 2008 and ECDL 2009, have =
confirmed the importance of the topic and eagerly started investigating =
the foundations of this new and =93hot=94 research field.=20

The goal of the Third Very Large Digital Library workshop is to =
prosecute such fertile discussions, hence to continue on providing =
researchers, practitioners and application developers with a forum =
fostering a constructive exchange among all key actors in the field of =
Very Large Digital Libraries.=20

Main topics=20
Topics of this workshop are of interest to, but not limited to, the =
following research avenues:

Foundational
Definitional models, for VLDL content, functionality, users, and =
policies=20
(see the DELOS reference model):=20
- Architectural models for VLDL systems;
- Data models for VLDL content;
- Design methodologies for VLDLs.
System=20
Ideas, experiments and practical experiences in system design and
implementation:
- Constructing VLDLs as integration and federation of existing DLs;
- User management in VLDLs;
- Security issues in VLDLs;
- Sustainability issues in VLDLs;=20
- Scalability issues in VLDLs;
- Distribution issues for VLDLs;
- Interoperability issues for VLDLs: content and functionality;
- Managing content in VLDLs: storage, indexing, integration, =
aggregation, preservation, manipulation, and others.

Important Dates=20
Research paper submission: June 25th, 2010 =96 EXTENDED to July 2nd, =
2010
Notification of acceptance: July 25th, 2010
Camera ready version: August 31st, 2010

Paper Submission=20
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers in =
the field of Very Large Digital Libraries. Submitted papers will have to =
explicitly motivate the relation between the research results they =
present and the very large digital library issues they intend to =
address.

Submitted manuscripts will have to be limited to 8 pages, written in =
English and following the guidelines for the LNCS format provided by =
Springer. Preferred formats are PDF and Microsoft Word. Papers must be =
submitted via the conference submission system: =
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=3Dvldl2010

Proceedings, including abstracts from the invited speakers and the =
revised papers, will become a publication (ISBN-ISSN, publisher to be =
chosen).

Workshop Organisers=20
- Yannis Ioannidis, Department of Informatics, National and Kapodistrian =
University of Athens, Greece;
- Paolo Manghi, Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione =
(ISTI), National Research Council (CNR), Pisa, Italy;
- Pasquale Pagano, Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione =
(ISTI), National Research Council (CNR), Pisa, Italy.
