located only one holding (JTSA) which lists vols 1-3 (vol 3 in facsimile =

on five continents, creating and compiling this collection of images of =
Jewish communities, faces and culture. Brenner has woven a thread, =
through the visual image, that shows a people united in their heritage. =
This beautiful two volume set is presented in a heavy laminated =
slipcase. Volume I, PHOTOGRAPHS, contains 262 of Brenner's black and =
white photos, 2 two-page color photographs, and one map. There are =
images of a Jewish Harley-Davidson motorcycle club with members posed in =
front of a Miami Beach synagogue; Jewish workers and their children from =
Birobidzhan, the former Soviet Union's Jewish autonomous region; =
portraits of modern Jewish writers living in Austria and Germany; women =
who have lost their children to the secret police in Argentina; Marranos =
in Portugal who continue the tradition of celebrating the Passover =
secretly; Jewish men selling Christian souvenirs in Rome's St. Peter's =
Piazza; a spiritual gathering of Navahos and Jews in Arizona; Jewish =
barbers from Tajikistan and merchants from Calcutta. The only color =
photographs in the book show a yellow swatch of cloth printed with the =
Star of David that Jews were forced to wear under the Nazis. There is an =
entire room covered in the same cloth - a photograph commissioned for =
the Vienna State Opera that hung there as a stage curtain. Volume II, =
VOICES, contains writings - essays and commentary from such modern =
intellectuals and authors as Carlos Fuentes, Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, =

Bible critic who emigrated to the United States in 1878. "The =
publication of his German commentary on the Book of Psalms (1905), which =
included a new translation, was a turning point in his life. It served =
as an introduction to his German commentary on the Bible, which like his =
Hebrew one consists of notes on the Bible, Randglossen zur hebraeischen =
Bibel (7 vols., 1908-14) . Ehrlich included part of the material from =
his Hebrew commentary, but in an expanded form, as well as new =
interpretations arrived at since its publication; many of his earlier =
opinions are changed here. Only rarely does he comment on aspects dealt =
with by the "higher criticism. " He concentrates on textual criticism =
and reconstructions, and his very numerous emendations (especially in =
his German commentary) are at times conjectural (such as: haplography or =
dittography, letters having a similar appearance in the ancient or in =
the square script, the use of abbreviations, glosses, etc. ), and in =
most cases are not even based on ancient translations. His comments, =
which are distinguished by their originality, at times have the quality =
of homiletics and are derived from Ehrlich's innovating spirit; yet =
through his sound linguistic instinct and fine linguistic =
differentiations he succeeded in illuminating and explaining, with great =

imbibed a love for Oriental studies, to which for a time he entirely =
devoted himself. In 1875 he published a thesis on the mythology of the =
Avesta, and in 1877 became teacher of Persian language at the =C9cole =
des Hautes =C9tudes. He continued his research with his =C9tudes =
iraniennes (1883), and ten years later published a complete translation =
of the Avesta and associated Zend (lit. 'commentary'), with historical =

The cities of Troki (Lithuanian: "Trakai") in Lithuania near Vilna, and =
Kukizow (Krasny ostrov) near Lvov, were bastions of Karaism in Eastern =
Europe.
Mordechai ben Nisan (17th Century) was Haham of the Karaites at Kukizow. =
His most famous work, Dod Mordechai (Hamburg, 1714, with Latin =
translation by J.L. Wolf), a history of Karaism and its doctrine, was =
written in responde to Jacob Trigland of Leiden. His grammatical work, =
Kalalim, is yet unpublished.=20
Solomon ben Aaron lived at Troki in the seventeent and eighteenth =
centirues. A relation to Mordechai ben Nisan, Solomon made liberal use =
of his works. Solomon's most famous work is Apiryon, which provides =
consise answers to the qurestions of the Swedish minister as to the =
origins of Karaism and its doctrinal differences with Rabbinism. Apiryon =
was published by Neubauer in Aus der Peterburger Bibliothek (Leipzig, =
1866). Another work, Rach VeTov, lays out a controversey between the =
Karaites and Rabbinites in the form of questions and answers and also =
remains unpublished. The manuscript here, by the same name, also takes =
the form of questions and answers, but regarding Hebrew grammar instead =
(See Jewish Encyclopedia vol.12, p 266; Encyclopedia Judaica vol 10, =

Jewish and cognate studies. Castro (1885-1972), was a "Spanish historian =
and literary critic. Castro was a professor at the University of Madrid =
and later at Princeton University. He interpreted the culture and =
history of Spain as a result of the coming together of Christianity, =
Islam, and Judaism, which created a peculiarly Hispanic form of life, =
different both from the East and from the civilization of Western =
Europe. The expulsion of 1492 was in Castro's view the result of =
uncontainable pressures from below. He believes that the preoccupation =
with purity of lineage in Christian Spain from the 15th century on was a =
transfer of a Jewish concept, due to the infiltration of converts into =
Christian society. The use of secrecy and informers by the Inquisition =
was a continuation of methods used by Jewish tribunals. Ultimately, =
according to Castro, it was the Jews and their descendants the Conversos =
who were responsible for the discrimination by the Spaniards against the =
New Christians because of the latter's blood or race and for the cruel =
and unjust methods employed by the Inquisition and the maltreatment of =
those who were brought to trial before it. These were all derived from =
Jewish sources and traditions. Castro relied on "evidence" from the =
Bible, from the origin of the Spanish aristocracy, from medieval Jewish =
authors like Santob de Carrion (Shem Tov ben Ardutiel), R. Moses =
Arragel, R. Asher ben Yehiel, R. Solomon ben Adret, and others. Castro's =
evidence is based entirely on a basic misunderstanding of the sources, =
of the Jews' understanding of the biblical text, and of the essence of =

a position as rabbi to the Jewish community of Wiesbaden from 1832 to =
1837 and continued his academic publications primarily through the =
scholarly journals he founded and edited, Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift =
fuer juedische Theologie (1835-39) and Juedische Zeitschriftfuer =
Wissenschaft und Leben (1862-75) . His journals became an important =
vehicle in its day for publishing Jewish scholarship, and they included =
historical and theological studies as well as discussions of =
contemporary Jewish affairs. Although criticized sharply for his =
opposition to Jewish national identity, notably in his refusal to =
intervene on behalf of the Jews of Damascus accused of ritual murder in =
1840, Geiger sought to instill a deep sense of pride in Jews. He argued =
that Jews deserve credit for giving birth to the three major =
monotheistic traditions of the West, and also for those principles of =
religious tolerance and freedom of belief that constitute the basis of =

entire country. His office was in Jassy, but he still had juristdiction =
of Jews in the southern territories of Wallachia. This cheif Rabbi had =
officers spread through out the Romanian state called vekil Hahambasi, =

until 1834 when it dissolved. Instead of the Prince making a Rabbi the =
Hahambasi, it was now up to the Jewish people to elect their own =

legal disputes of the time, a powerful politician who was a leader in =
the cause of Southern rights and on behalf of the short-lived =
Confederacy. He was the first professing Jew to be elected to the United =
States Senate, as a Whig in 1852, and as a Democrat (after the =
Democratic Party espoused the cause of Southern rights) in 1856. He =
became a leading member of the school of Southern politicians which =
favored secession from the Union as the only safeguard for Southern =
survival and delivered a number of major addresses in the Senate =

and was immediately called to the cabinet of the newly created =
Confederate government as attorney general. President Jefferson Davis =
relied heavily upon Benjamin's companionship and counsel and appointed =
him to the more important position of secretary of war in September =

appointed him secretary of state, a position which he held until the =

member of the Commission of Inquiry into Jewish Education in Palestine, =
on behalf of the British government. The only Jew on the commission, =
Simon objected to the conclusion that English should be the language of =
instruction in higher education.. Simon was a brilliant writer in both =
English and Hebrew. He published essays and articles in English on =
Zionism and Hebrew culture and literature. Some of his essays were =
collected in Studies in Jewish Nationalism (1920) . He edited the =
anthology Aspects of The Hebrew Genius: Essays on Jewish Literature and =
Thought (1910) and wrote The Case of the Anti-Zionists: A Reply (1917) =
and Zionism and the Jewish Problem (1918) [sic, 1915]. Together with =
Leonard Stein, he edited Awakening Palestine (1923) . Simon's main work =
in English is his translation of A? Ad Ha-Am's writings, which were =
first published in journals and later in books (a list of translations =
