FYI France: classes in The Book, in Lyon
One way to broaden & deepen modern interface design, data-mining,=20
user studies, is to look at how they've been done before. Printed=20
books did all these things -- manuscripts did them too -- the=20
idea that "users" might need help in finding and going through=20
"texts" is not new.
In Lyon the Institut d'Histoire du Livre offers classes in these=20
subjects. Again this year they provide excellent reasons /=20
excuses for taking some time this summer in Lyon --

BOOK HISTORY WORKSHOP
Lyon, 31 August - 3 September 2010
For the eighth edition of its Book History Workshop, organised in=20
collaboration with the Rare Book School (University of Virginia),=20
the Lyon-based Institut d'histoire du livre is offering four=20
advanced courses in the fields of book and printing history.
Courses on offer this year are:
Neil Harris
PAPER AND WATERMARKS AS BIBLIOGRAPHICAL EVIDENCE (course in English)
James Mosley
PRINTING TYPE: 1450-1830 (course in English)
Dominique Varry
INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL (ANALYTICAL) BIBLIOGRAPHY (course in French)
Michael Twyman
PRINTED EPHEMERA UNDER THE MAGNIFYING GLASS (course in French)
The Book History Workshop is aimed at book and printing=20
historians and at the many other specialists who encounter=20
questions related to book and printing history in the course of=20
their work: researchers, teachers, archivists, librarians, museum=20
curators, antiquarian booksellers, collectors, designers, etc.
The four-day courses offered by the Institut d'histoire du livre=20
cover various aspects of the history of the book and graphic=20
communications. Subjects are dealt with from both theoretical and=20
practical points of view through illustrated lectures,=20
discussions and close study of original documents. The courses=20
make abundant use of the collections of Lyon City Library, Museum=20
of Printing and City Archives.
The courses will take place in Lyon from the 31 August to the 3=20
September 2010. Classes will be held at the =C9cole normale=20
sup=E9rieure de Lyon with sessions at the Lyon City Library, the=20
Printing Museum and the City Archives.
Tuition fee: 490 euros (mid-day meals included).
In order to facilitate access to collections of original=20
documents, the number of participants is limited to twelve per=20
class.
