FYI France: digital & other music library resources
France has music! Some of the finest concerts I've ever attended=20
have been held in tiny French locales, hidden away in ancient=20
nooks which have hosted music for a millennium...
Online, then, French music library resources have been=20
proliferating: for example,
** Conservatoire de Paris
Yes, this is _the_ "Conservatoire" -- although nowadays, since=20
1980, there is another one 'way down-south in Lyon, too, see=20
below. This venerable institution up in Paris, though, now in its=20
relatively-new digs (1990) out at La Villette (metro Porte de=20
Pantin), has assembled an impressive array of music resources online --
[Unfortunately the CNSMDP site is built on Flash apps which=20
currently cannot be read via iPhone... grr...]

-- for instance the following resources now are offered by the=20

from the following list, the extent to which "music" now is=20

"presentation
"The Nadia Boulanger Multimedia Library occupies the part of the=20
building that formerly housed the library of the veterinary=20
school. The official architecture of the nineteenth century is=20
still apparent in the walnut panelling and the fine craftsmanship=20
of the cabinets once used to display the anatomy collection, all=20
of which blends quite naturally with the high-tech design of the=20
new furniture and digital stereo listening equipment.
"The Nadia Boulanger Multimedia Library was opened in 1980, at=20
the same time as the Lyon CNSMD itself. It owes its name to the=20
donation made to the Lyon CNSMD by Annette Dieudonn=E9 in=20
accordance with the wishes of Nadia Boulanger, who requested that=20
the collection of music she had used for her own work should=20
serve the needs of young professional musicians after her death."

M=E9tro Ligne D, Arr=EAt station VIEUX LYON (Cath=E9drale St Jean),=20
Funiculaire direction FOURVIERE...
-- this must be the only music conservatory in the world reached=20
by "funiculaire"...
[tr. JK:] "The Conservatoire de Lyon possesses a M=E9diath=E8que of=20
great richness. It plays an important role in the music=20
curriculum of the students, and it represents an important=20
pedagogical tool for the instructors. It also is a resource of=20
inestimable value for outside musicians, amateur or professional,=20
as well as for researchers in musicology.
"The collections are 60% gifts of the musicians and other donors=20
of Lyon -- Ennemond Trillat -1890-1980-, L=E9on Vallas -1879-1956-,=20
Henry de Chaponay, Ninon Vallin -1886-1961-, Henri Dumoulin, etc.=20
They are divided in three sections: the biblioth=E8que, the=20
discoth=E8que, and the r=E9serves.
"A total of 73,000 documents is accessible for in-library use or=20
for loan. The M=E9diath=E8que is open to all!
"The biblioth=E8que provides in-library use and loan of scores,=20
books and periodicals. It contains 45,000 scores, 6,000 music=20
books and encyclopedias, and 2,000 specialized periodicals.=20
Nearly 20,000 scores are available for loan. The biblioth=E8que=20
also contains a valuable collection of instrumental and vocal=20
scores of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Loans are free of=20
charge for the students and instructors of the Conservatory.
"The discoth=E8que is a space for in-library listening and reading,=20
offering 7000 CDs, 1500 phonograph records, 50 DVDs, et 500=20
books. This space is enriched by many significant gifts and=20
legacies, of classical music and jazz, of the music critic=20
Ferruccio Nuzzo, the Lyonnais jazz researcher and collector Alain=20
Yves-Aim=E9 Fournier (1945-2006), and of Roger Accart (1920-2007),=20
founder and backer of 'Musique du temps', and of Anne-Marie Lamy,=20
former professor of piano at the Conservatory."

A remarkable array of online services:

** Biblioth=E8que nationale de France / la BnF, music
A world-class resource to be "data-mined", truly -- there is a=20
great deal here, in this now-enormous, multi-media, multi-site in=20
both the physical and the virtual sense, bibliographic and=20
general informational extravaganza, now called the Biblioth=E8que=20
nationale de France -- only some part of which may be reached via=20
the following brave attempt at a website summary... being a=20
librarian at an institution like the BnF is a little like riding=20
an enormous tidal wave, you don't control or even guide it,=20
sometimes it's all you can do just to stay in the saddle...

Being pragmatic am=E9ricain, moi, I cherish no Gallic dreams of=20
completeness and universality: there's always one more library, I=20
believe, in a place as information-filled as France -- one more=20
place which has nourished scholars and the simply curious,=20
sometimes for centuries, sometimes since last week when it made=20
its first appearance on the Ouebbe.
At http://www.fyifrance.com I maintain long lists of these=20
resources, with links and other information, and recently I have=20
been expanding the music and music library information. So, if=20
anyone would like to suggest an entry -- some favorite spot in=20
Paris, some treasured archive out en province -- please send a=20
note to kessler@well.com and I will add it.
