Libraries are providing access to more and more online electronic articles
and similar content, and much of it is in a PDF format. This true of any
electronic reserve system at university libraries.
PDF is a versatile and powerful format and its cross-platform feature is
attractive.
However, if the PDF document is not properly designed, the document may be
partially or entirely inaccessible for users with visual and cognitive
disabilities. Below are 3 resources to help to explain why and to
demonstrate how to make sure your documents are designed with universal
design in mind.
Adobe - Accessibility Resource Center

In recent years Adobe has redesigned its authoring tools to permit authors
to create accessible documents. However, it is not automatic. You have to
make the appropriate design choices.
WebAIM: PDF Accessibility - Defining Acrobat PDF Accessibility
http://www.webaim.org/techniques/acrobat/
WebAIM is one of several resources that provide online tools and
information that will help you.
EASI Webinars are another resource, and there is a fee-based 4-part series
starting Sept. 10:
Accessible and Usable PDF Documents: Techniques for Document Design
EASI 4-part fee-based PDF Webinar Series
Thursdays September 10, 17, 24, and October 1 all at 2 PM Eastern

Registration for the series is $195 but is free for all annual members)
Sept. 10: Creating PDF with authoring tools and by scanning from hard copy
Sept. 17: Document tagging and logical document structure
Sept. 24: repair tools are important to fix a document that lacks
accessibility.
Oct. 1: Exporting documents created with other tools into accessible PDF
format.
