==================================
The Swiss Library networks have increased their collections and are now
faced with the problems of growth, collaboration, and integration of their
catalogues.
In the most important of these networks, the French and Italian libraries,
coexist in three speech regions with general collection libraries next to
University libraries, special collections on humanities next to special
collections in the exact sciences.
Three of these networks (French- and italian-speaking network, Basle-Bern
network, Eastern Switzerland network), today, are moving towards three
million listings, are using the SIBIL computerized catalogues system, and
index into two of the official Swiss Languages.
SIBIL (Systeme Informatise pour BIbliotheques [Lausanne]; Lausanne
Library Computerized System) not only hooks up Switzerland, but also
connects to the SIBIL-France network and the SIBIL-Luxemburg network,
which constitutes the REBUS network (REseau des Bibliotheques Utilisant
SIBIL).
Development, collaboration, multilingualism, natural language and
Scientific terminology are the basis of the indexed material which provid an
optimal tool for accessing informations.
It is necessary to strike a balance of the principles, practices, problems and
collaborations of indexation into a specific linguistic domain, especially for
the northern french-speaking countries. It needs to be made clear that their
circumstances are often similar, multilingually as to those of Switzerland
and that the catalogue systems LAVAL and RAMEAU are used inside as
well as outside REBUS.
Finally : Although intended for librarians and indexers, this symposium is
open to all, who are interested in accessing information in the domain of
library Science.
