There is a mechanism in place for this kind of information and they
are very happy to distribute it - the U.S. Postal Service.

Subject: appropriate announcements
I am hardly the one to talk about being "pc", and it is not the term
I would use in this case. Seriously, the answer may be to set up a listserv
specifically FOR announcements of general interest, whether from RLG,
OCLC, the Podunk Library Association, or whoever. There IS a list dedicated
to job announcements, but it still seems that this list and many others
continue to be deluged with job announcements (which I delete unread from my
mail list); therefore a separate list may not be the answer, unless
moderated lists refuse to post inappropriate items, and the senders become
willing to only post to appropriate places. I personally find much "junk
mail", whether electronic or paper, of interest. However, seeing the
20th consecutive announcement of a local meeting of specialized interest
(perhaps the West Nowhere ILL Group Luncheon) on every listserv, not just
on ILL-L does seem to go beyond the bounds of appropriate professional judgment
and behavior.

Subject: REG: RE: RLG--News or Advertising
I personally have no problem with RLG advertising on BITNET or INTERNET. I
object to somebody charging $10 for a publicity brochure. I wish someone from
RLG or RLIN would kindly respond.
