New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia
Special Issue on Web Archiving

Web Archiving has changed from being a minority curiosity to a major field
of activity by large institutions world-wide. Originating in the cultural
heritage sector with the aim to preserve ephemeral information on the World
Wide Web, it is now pursued by institutions responsible for archiving web
resources in a variety of domains including the educational, scientific,
information retrieval, sociology, political sciences, and technology
monitoring.
Yet, the challenges inherent in Web Archiving are far from solved. Numerous
issues require further investigation, recommendations and technical
solutions. To name just a few: What are the optimum strategies and tools for
collection building or selection priorities? The enormous volume of data
accumulated requires new storage models; once the information is stored, how
can we ensure that we keep the information useable and accessible in the
future, rather than having it turn into a useless set of accumulated bit
streams; what are sociological and financial issues involved in creating
such archives and storing and keeping available otherwise ephemeral
information.
This special issue invites contributions of researchers and practitioners on
issues related to the building, running, and usage of Web Archives. All
submissions will be subject to peer review.
