HWGUIDE Version 0.9
HWGUIDE is my MS-DOS hypertext version of Dana Noonan's very
informative _A GUIDE TO INTERNET/BITNET_ (January, 1992). I have
converted Dana's guide into hypertext, using NTERGAID's HyperWriter
3.0 authoring software. HyperReader (HR) is the runtime hypertext
engine for this hyperdocument.
HyperWriter is an excellent hypertext authoring environment, capable
of much more sophistication than this very basic system which I've
produced. That's why I called it "Version 0.9"; it was really my
self-study project for learning how to use HyperWriter.
If you are interested, the hypertext system is available by
downloading two files by anonymous ftp from:
hydra.uwo.ca (in the libsoft directory)
The files you need are HWGUIDE.ZIP and HWGUIDE.DOC. The .DOC file is
an ASCII text file with short instructions for installing and
initially using the hypertext system. I compressed the .ZIP file using
PKZIP 1.02.
I have below further adapted Peter Scott's adaptation of Roy Tennant's
concise instructions for retrieving files via anonymous ftp. The
following describes how to obtain HWGUIDE version 1.0 from Gordon
Nickerson's (University of Western Ontario) ftp site (thanks Peter,
thanks Roy, thanks Gordon):
TO RETRIEVE HWGUIDE:
--------------------
At your host system prompt, enter: ftp hydra.uwo.ca
When you receive the Name prompt, enter: anonymous
When you receive the host password prompt,
enter your Internet address: jdoe@utdallas [for example]
At the ftp> prompt, enter: cd libsoft
Then enter: get hwguide.doc
At the next ftp> prompt, enter: binary
Then enter: get hwguide.zip
After the transfer has finished, enter: quit
Then you will be back to your own host command mode.
(A BIT OF EXPLANATION: the ftp program defaults to ASCII text
transfer, for the HWGUIDE.DOC file. The "binary" command changes the
transfer type to binary, for transfer of the HWGUIDE.ZIP binary file.)
TO DOWNLOAD IT TO YOUR PC:
--------------------------
There are many PC communications and "protocol transfer" programs, and
I will not attempt to give step-by-step instructions here. Check your
software instructions for for downloading *binary* and *text* files
from your local host account to your PC. You might want to to check
first with your computer center staff to get time-saving pointers.
(They get Reference Desk assignments, too.)
TO UNCOMPRESS HWGUIDE.ZIP:
--------------------------
Make a new directory on your hard disk (e.g., mkdir hwguide).
Copy HWGUIDE.DOC and HWGUIDE.ZIP into the new directory.
Make sure you are in that directory, then use PKUNZIP to decompress
the hypertext runtime files. It's a No-Brainer, as long as PKUNZIP is
on your path or in the same directory:
pkunzip hwguide
Please print and read HWGUIDE.DOC for further installation tips, and
instructions on how to startup the hypertext system.
PROBLEM-SOLVING CAVEATS:
I am neither an Internet nor ftp expert, I've myself basically
just been a follower of clear instructions, like Roy Tennant's, in the
past. The variety of systems and installations and problems/quirks is
apparently endless. If you have problems with ftp-ing or downloading,
please check with your local computer center staff or friendly
neighborhood network power user.
Unzipping...I use PKZIP a lot for handy compression tasks, but
again, I ain't no expert. I know that the HWGUIDE.ZIP file at
hydra.uwo.ca is a good one; Gordon Nickerson has unzipped it there,
and reports that it works fine. If you have problems, I would guess it
has to do with corruptions somewhere in the ftp and downloading to PC
process. Again, check with your local friendly Mr. GoodByte.
Cheers,
Ernest Perez
