Area Studies Librarians
 Binghamton University Libraries, State University of New York

The Program in Asian and Asian American Studies supports the study of Asia
and Asian histories, languages, and cultures within Asia as geographically
defined; as well as Asian diasporas, with particular focus on Asians of the
Americas.

Binghamton University Libraries invites nominations and applications for the
following tenure track area studies positions.

Area Studies Librarian for Asian and Asian American Studies

Responsibilities:  Under the direction of the Head of Reference & Electronic
Services develops and manages the collections, subject web pages, and
bibliographies in support of teaching and research in Asian and Asian
American Studies. Serves as liaison between the Libraries and the Program as
well as students utilizing CJK materials. Assesses and develops scholarly
print and electronic resources from and about Asia, with a focus on China,
Japan, and Korea.
Provides reference service, including responding to in-person, telephone,
and electronic inquiries. Provides individual research consultations.
Provides and promotes specialized instruction services to students and
faculty involved in Asian Studies. The reference and research activities are
in alignment with library-wide reference initiatives to support quality
service and a user-centered approach.

Qualifications
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution; fluency in written and
spoken Chinese, Japanese, or Korean; high level of professional competency
in written and spoken English; excellent interpersonal and communication
skills; ability to work effectively in a team and in a dynamically changing
environment; ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies; strong
interest in working with students and faculty; commitment to user-centered
library services; willingness to work with new concepts and technologies;
evidence of professional growth, service activities, and contribution to the
library profession to meet faculty criteria for promotion and tenure.

Preferred: Advanced degree or graduate coursework in Asian and Asian
American Studies or substantial knowledge of Asian Studies as a discipline;
demonstrated experience providing reference service, instruction, or
collection development in an academic or research library; substantial
knowledge of Asian publishing and book trade; skill in developing,
organizing, and maintaining web-based information resources.


Catalog Librarian for Asian and Asian American Studies

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Head of Cataloging Services
performs complex copy, original cataloging, and authority work for a wide
range of print and non-print materials, primarily Chinese, Japanese and
Korean, in various formats utilizing both transliterated and vernacular
language.

Qualifications
Required:  MLS from an ALA-accredited institution; familiarity with
cataloging practices including knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations, Library of Congress Subject Heading practice, and MARC21;
fluency in reading, writing, and speaking Chinese, Japanese, or Korean;
ability to work individually as well as in groups; strong oral and written
English language communication skills; knowledge of current trends in
cataloging and the willingness to work with new concepts and technologies;
evidence of professional growth, service activities, and contribution to the
library profession to meet faculty criteria for promotion and tenure; a
commitment to providing a high level of support services.

Preferred: Advanced degree or graduate coursework in an area of Asian or
Asian American Studies; demonstrated successful experience in cataloging,
serials, and/or authority control; experience with OCLC, RLIN and/or
ExLibris (Aleph); working knowledge of an additional CJK language;
familiarity with library automation developments and their application to
CJK materials, in particular Unicode.

Located in the Southern Tier of upstate New York, Binghamton University

talented students.  It is one of four doctoral granting institutions in the
State University of New York system.  The University enrolls over 13,500
students and is currently in its 57th year.

The Binghamton University library system is composed of the Glenn G. Bartle
Library, serving the Social Sciences and Humanities Divisions of Harpur
College, the School of Education and Human Development, and the School of
Management; and the Science Library, a branch library serving the Science
and Mathematics Divisions of Harpur College, the Decker School of Nursing,
and the Watson School of Engineering.

Finalists invited for an interview will demonstrate communication skills and
knowledge of trends in librarianship through a presentation to library
faculty, staff, and other members of the University community.

These are tenure track positions. The successful candidates will have a
combination of experience, education, and professional development to meet
faculty criteria for promotion and tenure. Competitive salary commensurate
with qualifications and experience plus excellent benefits including
TIAA/CREF.
