Position:			Catalog Librarian

Appointment Rank:		Assistant or Associate Professor

Salary:			$40,000.00 minimum

Available:			March 1, 2006

The University of Tennessee Libraries is looking for an innovative catalog
librarian with an interest in working in a collaborative environment. 
He/she must be able to catalog a diverse range of formats in various
languages following national standards.  The successful candidate will
also review the work, train and answer questions from cataloging
paraprofessionals, spend two hours weekly on the reference desk, and serve
on committees. This position participates in the work of the Technical
Services and Digital Access management team to maintain high quality,
user-centered service.  The University of Tennessee Libraries outsources
authority control, and basic cataloging processing.  Paraprofessionals do
most of the original cataloging leaving the librarians to handle complex
cataloging, act as consultants and trainers, and identify, investigate and
implement new processes.

Required qualifications: Master’s degree in an ALA accredited program at
time of appointment; substantive cataloging education or experience in
creating catalog records; working knowledge of cataloging resources,
standards and OCLC; excellent oral and written communication skills; the
ability to thrive in a team setting, manage shifting priorities, and
operate effectively in a diverse academic community.

Preferred qualifications: Interest or expertise in authority control,
non-MARC metadata, specialized formats (e.g. audio/visual, cartographic,
and/or electronic materials), reading knowledge of one or more foreign
languages (in particular Portuguese, German or Asian languages), and
teaching experience.

The University of Tennessee Libraries, with an annual budget of more than
$13 million, includes the John C. Hodges Main Library; the James D.
Hoskins Library, which includes the Map and Special Collection Libraries;
the Webster Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library; and
the George F. DeVine Music Library.  The Social Work Library is located in
Nashville.  Over three hundred persons are employed, including 58
librarians, 10 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150 students.  UT Libraries is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries.  The UT Libraries offers a Web-based information
system and access to a variety of electronic information sources.

Salary and Benefits:
Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, dependent upon
qualifications.  Minimum salary is $40,000.  Faculty rank and status;
twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must meet
University requirements for promotion and tenure, which includes research
and service components. Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days;
choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable
contributions paid for the employee by the University; optional group
health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is available for all
university employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available
to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
