EASI Free Web Conference On PDF Documents Oct. 20 at 2 PM
Presenter: Karen McCall, M.Ed.
Libraries frequently make liberal use of PDF documents on their Web
sites. These documents can be created quickly without maximizing their
usability and accessibility, or, using recent improvements to Acrobat, they
can be made much more useable and accessible also for users with
disabilities. This latter item is important to help library Web sites
conform to the Federal Section 508 Web accessibility standards.
This free overview and the subsequent 4-part tuition-based series in
November are based on Karen's recently published book.
Accessible and Useable PDF Documents : Techniques for Document Authors
ISBN 0-9738246-1-1
EASI is excited to have this consultant and author from Canada provide an
explanation of the nature of PDF. Frequently, those providing PDF
documents do not use proper structure and tagging to create correct format
documents. This is necessary to guarantee that the document can be read
correctly by any Web browser and by all up-to-date adaptive technology
applications used by people with disabilities.
Karen will be giving an overview of her book and of creating accessible PDF
documents in this free Web conference on Oct. 20 at 2 PM Eastern.

Accessible and Useable PDF Documents : Techniques for Document Authors
EASI 4-part Web conference series on 4 Tuesdays in November
Registration is $150 and you can read more at:
http://easi.cc/forms/pdf-series.htm
This series will walk participants, step-by-step through the details of
creating correct PDF. It is important that documents be both structured
and tagged as well as retaining the text under the image. Besides making
them more accessible for users with disabilities, this process guarantees
their being displayed properly and also makes sure they can be more readily
found by Web search engines.
The series will be based on Karen's 175 page book which will also be an
invaluable reference tool for anyone working
with PDF documents who wants to ensure their documents are accessible and
usable. With the inclusion of 75 additional support documents to work
through and
examine, you will already have many of the solutions you need.
The book begins with an overview of PDF document accessibility and how
documents are tagged. There are sections on the terminology used in the
book and
a brief guide to how to use the book for those new to the area of
accessibility.
As you work through the content, you will move from beginner to
intermediate levels of PDF document creation and repair. The book guides
you through the obstacles of forms, LiveCycle Designer and navigating the
process of making a TIF [Text and Image Format] document more accessible
and usable for your readers.
Keyboard commands are used and tips for people using screen readers are
included in topics wherever possible. You will use Adobe acrobat
Professional 7 and Microsoft Word 2003 to work through the aspects of good
document structure. This gives you a foundation for repurposing your
documents for PDF, DAISY or Braille formats.
Learn how to create more usable links in PDF documents, how to provide Alt
Text for links and images, and how to create more accessible forms. See
first hand what happens when a document is scanned and made accessible
using Adobe Acrobat Professional 7. Tips and techniques you work through
will also help in making legacy PDF documents more accessible and usable.
