In searching the PACS-L archives I had noticed a posting back in January
from Nicolas Eshelman concerning a survey that he had done regarding the
accountability for Library IT support in academic libraries. I was
wondering if anyone is aware of any similar source of information concerning
public libraries? I've hopefully searched the PUB-LIB archives and haven't
found anything there unfortunately.
Our City IT Dept. is trying to absorb more and more of our IT support and
from what I've heard this seems to be a trend in both academic and public
libraries. I'm more in favor of a cooperative approach; however our City
seems to be leaning toward the all or nothing approach. I'd be interested
in hearing some feedback from the list (from either an academic or a public
library perspective) on the pros and cons of letting your organization's
campus or city/county IT department take over technology support. Any
successful strategies that you've applied in order to keep IT support within
the library would be most welcome. Any success stories on how wonderful
your campus/city/county support has turned out to be might be heartening as
well!
