CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT
30th Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing
EMERGING COMMUNITIES:
INTEGRATING NETWORKED INFORMATION INTO LIBRARY SERVICES
Graduate School of Library and Information Science
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
April 4-6, 1993
Wide area computer networks, such as those comprising the
Internet, are providing libraries with access to a growing array of
information resources. They are also opening new channels for
communication both within and among organizations. Thus,
computer networking encourages information professionals to
merge, with others, into new electronic communities. The
upcoming conference will provide an opportunity for information
professionals in a wide variety of settings to share their expertise
and experiences related to the integration of networked
information into library services. Over 20 speakers--including
Paul Evan Peters, Clifford Lynch, Tom Grundner, Pauline A.
Cochrane, Charles Hildreth, John R. Garrett, Pat Molholt, Bruce
R. Schatz, Hope N. Tillman, Erik Jul, and Ronald L. Larsen--have
been assembled to discuss their research, experience, and
insights. Conference topics include: the use of computer networks
to accomplish institutional goals, provide traditional services, and
communicate with users in public, school, academic, and special
libraries; legal, economic, and policy issues related to the
electronic dissemination of information; bibliographic control of
networked information; and new roles for information
professionals. In addition, pre-conference workshops led by
George H. Brett and Greg Newby, Tracy LaQuey Parker and Philip
Doty, Anne G. Lipow, and F. W. Lancaster will provide attendees
with an opportunity to learn more about basic Internet use,
options and procedures for obtaining an Internet connection,
techniques for training staff and end-users in network use, and
methods for assessing networking needs and impacts. For more
