THE SOUTHERN OHIO CHAPTER of the
AMERICAN SOCIETY for INFORMATION SOCIETY
presents
Catherine Leininger, M.S. & Dieter Zirkler, PH.D.
IF IT COULD ONLY TALK:
PROBLEMS, SOLUTIONS and TRENDS at the USER INTERFACE
As information systems grow in their importance to a broadening
segment of the work force, the user interfaces to information
systems must meet the needs of this increasingly heterogeneous
group of users. Until recently, developers of information systems
paid little attention to the user interfaces of their systems.
This presentation will identify problems with the user interfaces
of current information systems and describe the strengths and
weaknesses of recent attempts to solve problems at the user
interface. We will use the recent trend towards natural language
interfaces as a case study in designing a user interface that meets
user needs rather than technical capability or marketing glitz.
Ms. Leininger is a computer scientist with Mead Data Central. She
specializes in natural language systems, user interface design, and
database architecture. Mr. Zirkler is a human factors psychologist
with Mead Data Central. He specializes in usability testing, user
interface design, and application of total quality methods to user
interface design.
