Cendrella & Anna,

We've just recently placed our order for a 3M Digital Materials Management
System utilizing the RFID tags. Since we already had two 3M self-checks
and RFID library systems are pretty much proprietary, it was a pretty
simple decision to go with 3M.

Yes, the technology is still a lot more expensive than bar codes, but from
what we understand it's also much faster. We are purchasing two Digital
Staff Workstations and a portable Digital Library Assistant. We believe
the Workstations will save us lots of time discharging items. We plan on
using the portable Digital Library Assistant for shelf reading and
inventory. This also should save us enough labor that our people will be
able to concentrate on other tasks.

We've spoken with the people at Farmington Public Library
http://www.infoway.lib.nm.us/ (in northwestern New Mexico) and they are
very happy with their system.

We expect to receive our equipment in a few weeks, and hopefully start
tagging by mid-February. If you'd like to drop me a line in a month or so
I'll give you an update on our progress.

Best regards,
Scott Furciniti, Library Systems Administrator
