"MANAGING CONTENT IN LIBRARY AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS"
is the topic of
RMG's Fourteenth Annual Presidents' Seminar: The View from the Top
Friday January 9, 2004, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at ALA Midwinter Conference, San Diego,
in Room 3 of the San Diego Convention Center
Libraries create many types of digital content, and subscribe to varieties of electronic resources. Now libraries are being asked to manage digital content that has been created to support learning environments in K-12 and higher education institutions. A dynamic array of vendors from several industries sells access to e-books, e-journals, databases, courseware, and learning objects. These industries offer to libraries choices of systems and services that create, manage, supply, and provide access to electronic resources.
Today's libraries deal with challenging numbers of:
* Formats for content, data, and metadata
* Learning Management Systems
* Content Management Systems
and
* Portal, interface, and searching solutions for access to resources.
Libraries find themselves in increasingly complex information and learning environments shaped by others.
The challenges facing libraries to manage and provide access to information resources now go well beyond the capabilities of Integrated Library Systems.
What do leading content providers, library systems developers, and learning technology companies believe is important for libraries and their users in today's Web-based information and learning environments?
* What is Content?
* What are Learning Objects?
* What are
° Learning Management Systems?
° Content Management Systems?
° Digital Asset Management Systems
° Digital Library Systems
° Content Object Repositories?
* Should libraries even consider creating content - and if so, what kinds?
* What systems and services for content production and management should libraries use?
* What kinds of solutions should libraries provide for their users to access content and learning services in library and learning environments?
* How should Integrated Library Systems, Learning Management Systems, Content Management Systems, and resource discovery Portals relate?
* What standards for the new library and learning environments should libraries seek and support?
The panel for RMG's Fourteenth Annual Presidents' Seminar will include representatives from various technology and content companies addressing the library and educational spaces.
The ground rules for panelists are to keep their discussions of library and learning environments and industries at professional and industry-wide levels, and not make sales pitches or promote their companies or products.
Librarians and leaders of companies from the information, library, and learning management sectors are invited to attend as members of the audience, and to add their questions and comments to those of the panelists.
Convened by Rob McGee, President of RMG Consultants, Inc., this free seminar annually focuses the library community on topics of significance. This unique industry forum for the exchange of ideas on leading edge developments is RMG's way of thanking librarians and companies whose energy and passion lead the library industry.
Registration is not required.
Panelists will be announced in a subsequent press release.
