Subject: Variant spellings/misspellings
Our OPAC (DYNIX), like some others, can be set up with a list of
variant spellings of words so that keyword searches of any variant will
produce hits including all variants.
In reviewing our OPAC search tracking reports, however, we note an
alarming number of no hits due to misspellings. Is anyone using the
variant spelling capabilities of their OPAC to include common misspellings?
Or, has anyone consciously not used this feature so as not to encourage
misspelling behavior?
Another option available to us is to add an electronic dictionary to
the system, but it's hard to say whether patrons would use it--or could
properly use it--after an unsucessful search attempt.
For author and subject indexes, creating SEE cross-references is another
alternative, but the idea of actually displaying a misspelled word makes
me cringe.

Subject: network utility request
I had recently issued a request for information on a network utility
which would allow me to connect the ports of an OCLC communications
controller through an async server on a Novell network.
Unfortunately I didn't completely read the new Passport manual before
I issued my request and the answer is right there in the manual.

Subject: ADONIS and Ariel
I asked Henk Compier, ADONIS Marketing Services Manager, about the possibilities
of linking ADONIS and Ariel, and this is his response (posted with his
permission):
Although in theory ADONIS could be linked to Ariel (and a number of studies
conducted by various ADONIS subscribers seems to indicate that this is possible)
it has not been practically implemented yet. Any research on this subject as
far as I know, is still rather theoretical. To this date we have not had any
discussions with RLG or other parties to link the two technologies. Although
it is not unthinkable that eventually the two technologies might be linked we
are not seriously pursuing this. If this ever happens we will naturally
inform all our customers.
