Thanks very much to all of you who have been taking a few moments to fill out the survey I posted at http://library.easternct.edu/systems/syssurv.php

Several of you have made excellent suggestions about making the survey more flexible in the multiple-choice section, and I have modified the form accordingly. I was able to make the change before too many surveys were submitted (and this isn't a rigorously scientific survey anyway) so in the end data will still be largely consistent.

I thought I might say a bit more about what I'm using the survey to look at. I'm interested in seeing how various libraries deal with meeting the huge and growing demand for support that is found on campuses of all sizes. In my experience, it is not uncommon for a library systems office with a staff of 2 FTE and several student workers to support several hundred PCs, a dozen servers and a number of critical applications that require very high uptime, in addition to many other pieces of hardware and software. My intent is to use the data from the survey to get a more solid handle on how much library IT offices really do take on and to see how they work with other campus IT units to provide that support. The survey, imperfect as it is, is a small part of a larger study.

A number of people have also expressed interest in seeing the data once the survey is complete. If enough people fill out the survey to make the data really worthwhile, I will summarize the results to the list. So far the response rate has been pretty good, but if you do IT support in an academic library, I'd be grateful if you could take a few minutes to fill out the survey.

Thanks --Nicholas
