The LITA Regional Institute "Proxy Web Servers & Authentication," with
presenter Peter Murray, will be held Friday, May 30, 2003, in the
Renaissance Hotel, Atlanta, GA. The program is jointly sponsored by LITA and
SOLINET.
The Institute program combines instruction on the theory of proxy servers
and their use in library situations with practical examples of
implementations. Following an outline of the background of proxy servers as
defined in the HTTP protocol specification, there will be a discussion of
the application of proxy servers for library uses, including:
* conserving bandwidth on your Internet link
* collecting statistics on database usage
* allowing access only to resources you specify or denying access to
resources you do not want available from your workstations
* providing access to IP address-restricted resources to patrons
outside your local network.
The program will provide sample implementations of these applications, and
will give special emphasis to using proxy servers to access IP
address-restricted resources, including a discussion of alternatives to
proxy servers for solving this particular problem. There will also be
discussion of anticipated developments in inter-institutional Authentication
and Authorization, such as project Shibboleth.
This program is intended for systems librarians and computer professionals
with some technical knowledge about the management of web servers. Library
administrators who are seeking an introduction to proxy servers have also
found this Regional Institute useful. Knowledge of C and/or PERL is
recommended for the implementation examples.
Peter Murray is the Director of Library Information Technology Services at
the University of Connecticut. In 1999, Murray was awarded the "Highly
Commended Award" by MCB University Press for his article "World Wide Web
Technologies in CWRU Libraries," published in New Library World, and in 2001
was awarded the first LITA/Endeavor Student Writing Award for his article
"Library Web Proxy Use Survey Results," published in LITA's Information
Technology and Libraries. He served as Chair of the Innovative Users Group
from 1999 to 2000, and has served on the LITA Program Planning and two
National Forum committees. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in
Systems Analysis from Miami University and is half way through his library
science degree at the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information
