Wanted: one LITA member with an interest in library research,
an open mind, and the willingness to do a little work.
Background:
LITA does not currently have a research committee. Many other
divisions do (some of them have more than one); there is also
a somewhat informal ALA library research task force made up of
representatives from these committees.
I will be appointing a LITA representative to this task force,
formally taking office on July 2 but effectively operating
as of the beginning of ALA 1992 Annual, with a specific charge:
1. To attend the meeting(s) of the task force
2. To look at (some of) the divisional/sectional research
committees
3. To think about such committees from a LITA perspective
4. To prepare recommendations (or at least an informal discussion
paper) for the LITA Board, as to whether LITA should have
a formal nexus for research activities (or whether we appear
to be well-served by existing mechanisms). The recommendations
should be ready by March 1993.
If you're interested, send me a message, preferably following
up with a brief resume via USMail or E-mail. I'm not interested
in true believers; you must be a LITA member; you can't be
so over-committed that you can't spare 2-4 hours at each
conference (for the task force meeting) and an appropriate
amount of thinking/writing time. (I'd guess 10-20 hours total.)
Please respond ASAP; I anticipate making the appointment
no earlier than May 18, but as soon after May 17 as possible.
The appointment will end in July 1993, but is renewable for
up to four years. (Naturally, if the recommendations are in
favor of forming a committee, and the LITA Board follows the
recommendations, the representative would probably have a key
role in forming the initial committee...but I won't be making
those decisions.)
NOTE: This is *not* a "tell us what we want to hear"
situation. As LITA Vice President/President-Elect, I
*really* don't know whether a LITA Research Committee
makes sense, and I don't think the rest of the LITA Executive
Committee does either.
