A note on the recent nationwide videoconference entitled "Safeguarding
our Patrons' Privacy: the USA Patriot Act."
A panel of very qualified participants suggested that when a warrant is
issued, the library staff should basically step aside and let law
enforcement do what they have been given authority by a court to do.
When a subpoena is issued, the suggestion was that a process should be
in place whereby the papers are quickly routed through the Library
Director and then the institution's legal counsel to ensure that the
proper paper work has been issued. In any case, the subpoena or warrant
should be routed to supervisory people within the library. The
day-to-day staff member, who may end up being a student worker, should
not have to deal with the issue.
Wanted to pass this along as I found the videoconference to be
immensely useful!!
