Those of you that live around San Fransisco or plan to be there Oct 28-
30, should plan on attending the InterOp. Last year, InterOp exhibition
concided with the MLA meeting in Washington, and I had the good fortune
(& common sense) of attending the exhibits. INTEROP offers very high
quality courses on networking, inter-networking etc. The courses ARE
DEEP LEVEL STUFF, and expensive, but the exhibition is only around $10/
day, and well worth it. Attending library based conferences, I used to
get the feeling of how far ahead we were with the technology, attending
this one made me feel how little we know about this technology! I'll
use an illustration to make a point and encourage you guys to attend...
One of the big hits at MLA was a connection to Internet that was
provided by FAXON. Well, I walked into Interop, and found....
20 X-terminals and VT320's supporting connections to Inter-Net, and
a host of other networks available for public use! The whole show
itself runs on a FIBRE backbone with FDDI and all the booths are
connected to it. The products are thus demonstrated live, with
connectivity to hosts, other vendors's products, protocol conversion
etc. In short, you can actually see the products work, in a live
AND complex environment. They have wireless LANS, hubs, routers,
bridges, protocol analyzers and the works.
The show is also a good example of an electronic society, your badge has
a magnetic strip, encoded with your name, company info, address etc.
Thus when you visit booths, instead of asking you for your business
cards, they simply borrow your badge, swipe it through reader, and punch
in any codes for your special requests, and you are done! (Of course it
also gives show organizers a verry good analysis of areas of interest,
traffic through each booth and so on...).
I am in no way connected with the INTEROP. After my trip last year, I
had decided to let PACS-L people know of the value of this show. For
