JOB ANNOUNCEMENT -- Bibliographic Services Coordinator
Assistant Librarian, California State University Monterey Bay Library

CSUMB LIBRARY: The mission of the Library is to help prepare
knowledgeable, resourceful, and responsible citizens for California and
the global community by facilitating active exploration, discovery and
synthesis of information. The Library currently holds more than 52,700
print volumes, 376 print subscriptions, 12,255 full-text electronic serial
publications, and over 1000 video titles. Collection development
emphasizes electronic and digital resources when available and
economically feasible, while the print and electronic collections are
augmented by a rapid, efficient Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan
operation available to the campus. In AY 2000/2001 the Library faculty
provided 300 instruction sessions and orientations attended by over 5,000
students, faculty, and staff. Presently seven Library faculty and eight
staff support the Library's innovative array of services. For additional

NOTE: The term of this Assistant Librarian appointment expires at the end
of three years. At the completion of the third year, it may be converted
to a Senior Assistant Librarian tenure-track position based on
satisfactory performance, curricular needs, student enrollment, and budget
considerations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Under the general direction of the Library Director, the Bibliographic
Services Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership in the
planning, organization, and evaluation of the Bibliographic Services unit.
Manages the workflow for acquiring, describing, and preserving the
Library's collection of electronic, print, and media resources. Supervises
3 library assistants (total of 2 FTE). Works closely and collaboratively
with Bibliographic Services staff to formulate and document the unit's
policies and procedures.
2. Applies standard resource description systems and provides direction in
the application of emerging standards for describing electronic resources.
Performs original cataloging of both print and non-print formats.
Responsible for resourceful utilization of the cataloging and acquisitions
modules of the automated library system, Endeavor's Voyager. Collaborates
with the Coordinator of Technology Development Coordinator in the further
implementation and customization of appropriate modules.
3. Works collaboratively with the Coordinator for Collection Development
in tracking and managing the collection budget. Administers vendors'
shelf-ready acquisitions service. Oversees copy cataloging for
direct-ordered and gift materials and serials for the Library.
Collaborates with the Electronic Resources Coordinator and Coordinator of
Technology Development in: developing strategies for access to and
preservation of digital library information; integrating electronic
monographs, serials and databases into the Library catalog; taking new
approaches to description and classifying in the electronic environment.
Responsible for the management and continuing development of the Capstone
& Thesis Archive (http://capstone.csumb.edu), including serving as archive
liaison with appropriate campus units.
4. Participates in reference services, information competence instruction,
and collection development (responsibilities in these three areas will
phase in during the first three years of the appointment.
5. Serves on Library, University, and regional committees as appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution. Experience in
one or more aspects of bibliographic services (cataloging, acquisitions,
and/or serials). Supervisory experience in a library or similar setting.
Experience in cataloging print and non-print formats (videos, CD-ROM,
and/or online resources). Working knowledge of MARC formats, AACR2rev,
LCSH and LC classification schedules. Experience with a bibliographic
utility (OCLC, RLIN). Knowledge of basic acquisitions principles.
Experience with one or more modules of an integrated library system
(cataloging, acquisitions, and/or serials). Demonstrated excellence in
verbal and written communication. Sensitivity to and demonstrated interest
in forwarding CSUMB's academic goals, as identified in the University
Vision Statement (http://csumb.edu/vision). Evidence of success in a
highly collaborative library or comparable environment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in organizing library resources in a Web environment.
Experience in describing electronic/digital resources in an integrated
library system. Experience in managing acquisitions, including
communicating with vendors, tracking a collection budget and working with
approval plans. Experience in managing serials in both printed and
electronic formats. Demonstrated understanding of how users access
information in online environments. Awareness of emerging standards for
resource description. Experience in subject area collection development
and in providing reference and instructional services for library users.
Knowledge of archival practices and principles. Experience Endeavor's
Voyager integrated library system. Second subject degree in a discipline
related to the campus academic program. Reading and speaking proficiencies
in a second language.
SALARY: Range of $45,000 to $48,000
