The University of Tennessee Libraries seeks a highly motivated
professional to join the Reference & Instructional Services team as the
Map/GIS librarian and subject liaison to Geography. This position has
responsibility for the Map Library, a collection of approximately
300,000 sheet maps and other cartographic resources housed in a 7000 sq.
ft. space in the James Hoskins Library building. The Map/GIS librarian
will emphasize outreach and user education for faculty and students
throughout the Knoxville campus who are in need of cartographic and
geospatial resources. This individual will define and shape the future
of GIS library services in close collaboration with the Social Science
Data Services librarian, the Government Documents Coordinator, and other
subject librarians.
Environment:
The University of Tennessee is a Carnegie Research Level One institution
and enrolls approximately 26,000 students from the United States and
over 100 other countries. UT is one of 27 higher education institutions
holding the distinction of being both a land-grant institution and state
university. The UT Libraries, with an annual budget exceeding $11
million, holds 2 million volumes and receives approximately 10,000
current serials. Over three hundred persons are employed, including 50
librarians. The UT Libraries is a selective U.S. Federal Depository site
and the Map Library serves as an Earth Science Information Center (ESIC)
for the state of Tennessee.

Responsibilities:
The Map/GIS librarian reports to the Head, Reference & Instructional
Services and participates in the work of the department to plan services
and to implement programs and projects. Primary responsibilities
include:
· providing traditional and digital reference services in both the Main
Library (Hodges) and the Map Library (Hoskins),
· providing subject specific reference, consultation, and instruction
for users needing assistance with digital and print cartographic
resources,
· participating in collection development and management activities for
geography and maps including selecting, organizing, and assessing
materials in all formats,
· organizing a team effort to plan and implement GIS user services
library-wide,
· coordinating user education programs and staff training activities
related to geospatial data and mapping in order to better integrate GIS
skills into instruction and learning campus-wide,
· providing oversight of Map Library operations, including supervision
of 1 FTE staff member.
Qualifications:
Required: MLS from ALA-accredited program. Knowledge of map
librarianship and GIS services. Commitment to quality user services for
a diverse clientele. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to
function effectively in a collaborative work setting. Evidence of
excellent oral and written communication skills with the potential to
excel as an instructor and trainer. Ability to work in a highly
networked environment and an interest in new technologies and their
application in academic libraries. Commitment to scholarship and
professional growth.
Preferred: Degree in a geo-science or related field and demonstrated
proficiency with GIS software, spatial data, and cartographic design
concepts. An understanding of government documents, cataloging
practices, and metadata creation. Experience in an academic library.
Salary and Benefits: Minimum for Assistant Professor, $35,000; for
Associate Professor, $42,000. Faculty rank and status; twelve-month,
tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must meet University
requirements for promotion and tenure. Excellent benefits include 24
annual leave days; choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with
nonrefundable contributions paid for the employee by the University;
optional group health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is
available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition
remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT
employees.
