ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION
POSITION: Reference/Instruction Librarian, with faculty rank
DATE POSITION AVAILABLE: Open until position is filled
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor, $29,000 for 12 months
RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):
1.Provide general reference service during assigned hours at the
reference desk, including some evenings and weekends.
2.Participate fully in planning and implementing reference and
library projects and programs.
3.Develop library instruction programs such as workshops,
lectures, tours, and instructional materials; serve as liaison with
faculty and students in determining instructional needs.
4.Schedule instructional sessions, assign instructors, present
instruction, keep statistics, and create and update user guides.
5.Design and implement computer-assisted, e-mail, and web-based
instruction.
6.Evaluate library instruction practices using appropriate
assessment measures.
7.Provide leadership in creating and implementing effective
library instruction programs for distance education students.
8.Publicize library instruction to students, faculty, staff, and
administration.
9.Supervise student employees.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Required:
ALA-accredited MLS.
Ability to teach and knowledge of effective instructional
techniques.
Knowledge of computerized reference sources, online
databases, the Internet, and Web design.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with faculty,
students, and staff.
2.Desirable
Additional subject master's degree.
Scholarly and professional competence.
Previous academic library experience in reference and
instruction.
DESCRIPTION OF THE LIBRARY: The library has a total of 26 staff
members including 13 professional employees. Its collection comprises
more than 330,000 bound volumes, over 126,000 microform equivalents,
more than 347,000 government documents, and over 2,700 media items. The
Library includes an online catalog, a strong archival program, a large
archives collection, a media center, and branches in Shreveport and
Leesville.
The building, completed and occupied in 1972, is an attractive,
modern building of three floors with about 94,000 square feet of space
and ample parking facilities.
DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIVERSITY: Northwestern State University of
Louisiana, with an enrollment of over 9,000 students is located on a
916-acre tract in historically rich Natchitoches, the oldest
permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. Founded in 1714,
Natchitoches is 70 miles southeast of Shreveport and 50 miles northwest
of Alexandria.
