eBooks for All

Back by popular demand, Mark Beatty will update his session from
earlier this year. Exactly what are eBooks? How do they work? And why should
I care? Once upon a time, books were enscribed on clay tablets, then they
were written on papyrus, don't even get me started on the monks and their
calfskin technique...Then, Gutenberg invented a printing press, and paper
was pressed from wood pulp. In fact, people could purchase pulp fiction.
Cheap? you bet! And today, books have become available electronically.
Electronic books? Yes, they are called eBooks. They might save whole forests
from that wood-pulp process. You may well scoff, but this seems to be the
wave of the millennium, eBooks for public consumption.
Join Mark Beatty of WiLS (Wisconsin Library Services consortium)for this
expanded version of the session he presented at the LITA National Forum last
Fall. This workshop will give you an overview of electronic book
technologies, with special attention on the netLibrary and Rocket eBook
products. Mark will demonstrate each product and compare/contrast them to
help you understand how the new eBook technologies can enhance library
services.
Audience: Library administrators and staff interested in learing more
about eBook technology and its possible impact on library services.
Prerequisites: None
Cost: $60 OHIONET members (INFOhio schools should prepay);
$95 nonmembers (must prepay)
