Vacancy Announcement
Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer
Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and
Chapel Hill. One of the nation's premier concentrations of academic,
corporate, and public research, the area combines moderate year-round
temperatures, rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich
diversity of cultural events. While the Triangle consistently leads the
lists of desirable American communities, the North Carolina State
University Libraries has been recognized as the first recipient of the
Association of College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic
Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and continuous interaction
with students and faculty to further the educational mission of NC State
University. In the past seven years, the NCSU Libraries has made an
unprecedented rise through the ranks of the Association of Research
Libraries to its current position of 35th among the 112 university
member libraries.
The NCSU Libraries is seeking one of the leading metadata librarians in
the field to explore and develop current and emerging models for
organizing information and resources. The Metadata Librarian will be
based in Cataloging and will be a liaison to the Digital Library
Initiatives Department. The Cataloging Department
(http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/cataloging/cathome.htm) consists of 6
librarians, 19.5 staff, a Computing Consultant, and a Libraries Fellow.
The NCSU Libraries catalogs over 45,000 titles and 100,000 volumes each
year, including books, serials, audio-visual software, and e-resources.
Cataloging participates in OCLC and in preservation microfilming
activities through our regional network, SOLINET. The Libraries is an
active participant in the CORC Project, which is used to guide
electronic resources through the selection process to the catalog.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, leads metadata initiatives for the
NCSU Libraries. As the resident authority for metadata standards,
collaborates with others to define metadata needs and to implement
solutions that ensure user-centered access to resources. Provides
expertise for development projects that utilize XML, EAD, FGDC, Dublin
Core, and other standards. Participates in non-MARC text, spatial and
numeric, and image database projects. Coordinates non-MARC metadata
initiatives within the Cataloging Department, such as the NCSU Authors
Database (http://libntapp1.lib.ncsu.edu/cataloging/Authors).
As Metadata Librarian, performs some original cataloging, and
participates in training and support activities for copy cataloging
staff. Will be a key player in planning the next-generation integrated
library system and the implementation of the MetaStar Enterprise
software (http://www.blueangeltech.com/products.htm). Serves on
library-wide committees, task forces, and teams, and is expected to be
active professionally.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. At least three-five years of relevant
professional experience. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal
communication skills. Ability to work independently and in teams.
Preferred: Experience with relational databases and Web database
content brokers. Experience with XML and emerging metadata standards.

more than 37,000 print and electronic serials, and has a total annual
budget of approximately $20 million, with approximately $8 million
allocated to collections.The NCSU Libraries is the lead server site for
NC LIVE (North Carolina LIbraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type
library initiative, making digital resources accessible to the citizens
of North Carolina.
The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, and
the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and NC
State form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined
resources of more than 13 million volumes, and collections budgets
totaling more than $29 million.
Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,
not less than $50,000 for this position. Librarians have academic status
without tenure or rank. Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days
sick leave; health insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO); and
state, TIAA/CREF or other retirement options. Additional and optional
dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are
available. Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of
North Carolina is available. Relocation allowance.
