ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Vacancy Announcement
Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer
Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and
Chapel Hill. One of the nation's premier concentrations of academic,
corporate, and public research, the area combines moderate year-round
temperatures, rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich
diversity of cultural events. While the Triangle consistently leads the
lists of desirable American communities, the North Carolina State
University Libraries has been recognized as the first recipient of the
Association of College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic
Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and continuous interaction
with students and faculty to further the educational mission of NC State
University. In the past seven years, the NCSU Libraries has made an
unprecedented rise through the ranks of the Association of Research
Libraries to its current position of 35th among the 112 university
member libraries.
The North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Associate Director for Information
Technology. With visionary leadership and a staff focused on
achievement, the NCSU Libraries has earned a national reputation for
client-centered services, digital library initiatives, and a commitment
to defining the future of academic librarianship. The Associate Director
for Information Technology has a key leadership role in shaping and
guiding the vision for a library in which computing and networked
resources are transforming the delivery of both information and
services. A member of Directors Council, the senior management team,
the Associate Director for Information Technology enjoys the
collaboration of colleagues working closely together in defining and
developing strategic directions for planning, policy, and budget matters
of library-wide impact. The position reports to the Vice Provost and
Director of Libraries.
Responsibilities
Leads the Information Technology Division with its staff of 15
librarians and 16 technical and support staff. Holds administrative
responsibility for the Systems Department, Digital Library Initiatives
Department, and the server and help desk site of NC LIVE, a statewide
initiative to share electronic resources. Sets direction for the
Libraries’ information technology environment and services, and ensures
that programs, services, and infrastructure are responsive to the
academic needs of faculty, students, and staff of NC State. Develops
strategic goals and objectives; facilitates interaction and
communication within the division and throughout the Libraries. Develops
proposals and manages multi-million dollar information technology
budgets and expenditures. Encourages creative development in digital and
information technology initiatives that respond to or anticipate user
needs. Collaborates with information technology and distance education
colleagues at NC State to shape the network infrastructure for time- and
location-independent access. Represents the library in technology
matters both within and outside the university. Serves as the primary
liaison on information technology matters with the university’s
Information Technology division, Distance Education and Learning
Technology Applications division, and Administrative Computing Services;
the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), the Digital Library
Federation (DLF), the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and
other appropriate organizations. Is a member of the University Standards
Committee. Is a leader in library and divisional planning, serves on
university-wide committees, and is expected to be active professionally.
Qualifications
Required: Significant and appropriate education in information
technology with increasingly responsible assignments. Minimum of five
years of substantial and progressively more responsible experience in
information technology in a research library or university, including
management of personnel, budget, and strategic planning. A record of
successful implementation and management of emerging technologies.
Experience in project management and systems analysis and design.
Knowledge of information technology trends and applications, and of
scholarly communication patterns. Ability to work effectively with
staff, colleagues, faculty, and students in a team environment; ability
to encourage creativity and innovation. Commitment to the importance of
diversity in the academic community. Excellent interpersonal skills;
excellence in written and oral communication. Strong analytical skills,
with a broad conceptual outlook, and commitment to serving users and
staff with diverse needs and capabilities. Capacity to thrive in a
rapidly changing environment. Demonstrated record of professional
involvement and contribution.
Preferred: ALA-accredited MLS. Relevant information technology
experience in an academic research library.

As one of the nation's outstanding land-grant universities, NC State

The library system consists of a central library and branch libraries
for design, natural resources, textiles, and veterinary medicine. With a
staff of 309 FTE, the Libraries has over 2.9 million volumes, acquires
more than 37,000 print and electronic serials, and has a total annual
budget of approximately $20 million, with approximately $8 million
allocated to collections. The NCSU Libraries is the lead server site for
NC LIVE (North Carolina LIbraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type
library initiative, making digital resources accessible to the citizens
of North Carolina.
The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, and
the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and NC
State form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined
resources of more than 13 million volumes, and collections budgets
totaling more than $29 million.
Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,
not less than $90,000 for this position ($80,000 if appointed as
assistant director). Librarians have academic status without tenure or
rank. Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; health
insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO); and state, TIAA/CREF or
other retirement options. Additional and optional dental, life,
disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.
Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of North
Carolina is available. Relocation allowance.
