POSITION:   Media Services Librarian
APPOINTMENT RANK: Assistant Professor
SALARY:   Minimum $37,000
AVAILABLE:   October 1, 2001

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This tenure track faculty position reports to the Head, Music and Media
Services.  The Media Services Librarian is responsible for the
operation, services, and outreach programs of The Studio, which is a
part of the Hodges Library Media Center.  The Studio is a new service
area providing a digital laboratory with 20 high-end computers, media
input equipment, scanners, and software to digitize and manipulate
media.  It serves students and faculty in the creation of media-enhanced
instructional work.  The facility also provides space and assistance in
the use of electronic text resources and access to digital image
collections.  The Media Center, itself, offers an audiovisual collection
of 15,000 items for group viewing and individual study.  A staff of
three manages the Media Center, six group-viewing rooms, and a 150-seat
auditorium.

Responsibilities in The Studio include participation in consulting
services both at the service desk and by appointment, planning and
implementing instructional programs, and supervising one technical
support staff member and student assistants. Responsibilities in the
Media Center include collection development and management for
audiovisual and digital image collections, serving as a subject
librarian to provide liaison and instruction to the Cinema Studies
program, and consulting with faculty and students, from all subject
areas, who use digital media. In addition, the Media Services Librarian
works with library colleagues to coordinate services, especially related
to digital library initiatives; serves on library and university
committees; and engages in a program of professional development and
research.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in library science from an ALA
accredited institution.  Excellent communication skills, both verbal and
written.  Experience working with visual and audio formats.  Experience
using a wide variety of media software on both Mac and PC platforms such
as media software by Adobe and Macromedia, 3-D software, MIDI software,
and XML.  Knowledge of emerging trends in delivery of media in libraries
and instructional settings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or significant coursework in
cinema, broadcasting, instructional technology or an allied field.
Public service experience in an academic library. Supervisory or
teaching experience.  Understanding of copyright law and fair use.

BENEFITS: Minimum for Assistant Professor, $37,000. Librarians at the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville have faculty rank and status and are
appointed for twelve months. This is a tenure track appointment. Library
faculty must meet University requirements for promotion and tenure.
Annual leave is accrued at the rate of two days per month and sick leave
at the rate of one day per month. Faculty have their choice of a state
retirement plan or TIAA/CREF. Non-refundable contributions to either
retirement plan are paid for the employee by the University. Group
health and life insurance plans are available. Tuition remission is
available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition
remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT
employees.


ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee is a Carnegie Research Level
One institution and enrolls approximately 26,000 students from the
United States and
approximately 100 other countries. UT is one of 27 higher education
institutions holding the distinction of being both a land-grant
institution and state university. The
UT Libraries, with an annual budget exceeds $11 million, holds 2 million
volumes and receives approximately 10,000 current serials. The Libraries
system includes
the John C. Hodges Library and four branches on the Knoxville campus.
Over three hundred persons are employed, including 49 librarians.
