9:30 - 10:30 What Profession Is This And Why Are We Here Anyway?

The emerging technologies and the growth of information are
creating incredible new possibilities and opportunities to the field
of librarianship. From traditional libraries to a variety of dot.coms,
the ability to provide information wherever, whenever and however has
become big business. The popular focus on the information society has
generated discussion in our profession about who we are - are we
information professionals or librarians. In this session, Dr. Jenkins will
provide an overview on issues related to questions about what profession we
are and what titles we wear.

10:50 - 11:50 Values for 21st Century Libraries -- Michael Gorman, Dean of
Library Services, California State University, Fresno
Mr. Gorman will discuss the nature of values and their usefulness in
daily working life. He will stress the importance of continuity in the
approach to librarianship, even as processes change radically. He will
define eight core library values and illustrate their practical use in
changing library environments.

ENY/ACRL's 25th Anniversary!
1:15 - 2:40 Different Paths, Different Perspectives, One Profession: A
Panel Discussion
Our panelists will respond to the earlier presentations by Althea Jenkins
and Michael Gorman and address issues such as appropriate training of
future colleagues, recruiting qualified professionals, the role of library
schools and professional organizations in the profession, and professional
development paths throughout one's career. Questions and exchange from the
audience will be encouraged.
