North Carolina State University Libraries
Director of library preservation
Under the direction of the Head, Collection Management department, works
closely with collection managers, public services, Special Collections,
and Digital Library Initiatives staff to develop long-term preservation
plans and to evaluate the preservation needs of all formats. Supervises
a conservationist and five support staff plus students. Responsible for
binding, marking and repair operations; monitors and evaluates contract
binders and conservators; manages existing grant-funded preservation
projects and seeks funding for future projects; works closely with
preservation officers at Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) and
the UNC system libraries to develop disaster response strategies;
develops educational programs for staff and community outreach;
maintains environmental monitoring program; works with Digital Libraries
Initiatives department to identify new technologies for the preservation
of digital resources. As appropriate, this position will assume
collection management responsibility for a humanities or social science
subject. Serves on library-wide committees, task forces and teams. Is
active professionally and contributes to developments in preservation
research and practices.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Relevant professional experience;
knowledge of preservation and conservation management, including
technical, physical, and bibliographic aspects; awareness of emerging
preservation standards and technologies; familiarity with automated
binding systems; significant supervisory experience; demonstrated
program planning skills; excellent oral, written and interpersonal
communication skills.
Preferred: Minimum of three years professional experience. Familiarity
with conservation of archives, drawings, film and other non-book
materials. Experience in preservation of exhibit materials.
Experience in grant writing and monitoring commercial contracts.
Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank. Benefits
include: 26 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; health insurance
(comprehensive major medical or HMO); and state, TIAA/CREF or other
retirement options. Additional and optional dental, life, disability,
deferred compensation, and legal plans are available. Tuition waiver
program for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is
available. Relocation allowance.
