It's PC Magazine's bulletin board system. The utilities are written up in
the magazine, and distributed via this system. They are also available
for anonymous ftp from SIMTEL and its mirrors (oak.oakland.edu and
wuarchive.wustl.edu) in the directory PCMAG.

PC MagNet is a bulletin board set up by PC Magazine as a source for
downloading utilities features in the magazine. It's a pay-per-service
bulletin board rather than a free service. Many of the programs available
there eventually show up on free local BBSes. Looking for anything
in particular?

software for 300, 1200, 2400, or 9600 bits per second (bps), 7 data
bits, even parity, 1 stop bit and full duplex. To find the number
nearest you, dial 800-346-3247 (In Canada, dial 800-635-6225, voice
only). When the modem connects, press Enter. At the Host Name
prompt, enter PHONES. Follow the menus, note the number closest to
you, then hang up and dial the number you have just found.
To obtain the utility without ZiffNet connect charges, at the Host
Name prompt, enter CIS. At the User ID prompt, enter 60116,1. At the
Password prompt, enter PCMAGUTIL." Information follows concerning
joining ZiffNet.

PC Magazine's PC MagNet is a "24-hour-a-day interactive dial-up" bulletin
board which PC Magazine maintains through CompuServe. They advertise it in
most of the issues of PC Magazine. Whenever they publish a program or
utility in the magazine, a working copy of the software is made available
through the bulletin board. Also an index of all product reviews, forums
to share opinions with the editors, access to a computer software library,
and a consumer reference library are available.
You can join PC MagNet by phone. Call 1-800-346-3247 (with your
modem). When the modem connects, press <Enter>. At the HOST NAME
prompt, enter PHONES. Follow the menus and note the telephone
number closest to you. OR, call 1-800-635-6225 with voice telephone
and follow the instructions.
The communications software should be set at either 300, 1200, or
2400 bits per second, 7 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit, and full
duplex.
Dial the local number (that you obtained above). When you connect,
type <Ctrl>-C. At the HOST NAME prompt, type CIS. At the USER ID
prompt, type 177000,5000. At the PASSWORD prompt, type PC*MAGNET.
At the ENTER AGREEMENT NUMBER prompt, type Z10D9100. (These may
have changed, if you have difficulty, check the advertising for
PC MagNet in the latest issue, or call.)
Register your name and enter your MasterCard, VISA, or American
Express card number. (If this is for the library and you plan on
the library paying for it, call 1-800-848-8990 CompuServe instead
for an account number and password.)
Your personal User ID and Password will be displayed at the end of
the registration process. Record them for logging on over the next
few days; a new password will arrive in the mail within ten days to
confirm your subscription.
There are no up-front subscription charges; you pay only for the
time you spend on-line. CompuServe members can join by entering
GO PCMAG at any CompuServe "!" prompt. CompuServe Customer Service
can be reached at 1-800-848-8990. Outside the United States, call
614-457-8650.
PC MagNet costs $12.80 an hour for 1200 or 2400 bps service, or
$6.30 an hour for 300 bps service. Billing is based on 1-minute
increments.

board has been available several years now.
A subscription to PC Magazine costs about $29.97 for 22 issues. (The
price is from the 14 April 1992 issue.) With the payment of a subscription
you are sent two free 5 1/4" floppies with the "Best of PC Magazine's
