Announcement of Vacancy
TITLE: BIBLIOGRAPHIC ENHANCEMENT CATALOG LIBRARIAN,
Librarian I (LIB 305) Search Extended
Responsibilities : Reporting to the Manager of the
Bibliographic Enhancement Team, catalogs material with no copy or inadequate
copy. Includes original cataloging of printed materials, special formats
and electronic resources for the national database including rare and
archival materials for the MSU Libraries. Provides leadership in cataloging
issues; maintains awareness of national cataloging policies and issues;
participates in the development of local cataloging policies; works
cooperatively with other library units. The MSU Libraries is a member of
the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and contributes NACO records to the
national authority file. A reference and/or bibliographic assignment will
be included based upon the interests and background of the successful
applicant. This librarian participates in professional development and
research activities and serves on library and university committees as
elected or assigned; other appropriate duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA accredited MLS (Spring
2001 graduates are eligible and encouraged to apply); understanding of basic
national cataloging rules and tools; excellent oral and written
communication skills; ability to work in a flexible, dynamic, and
challenging environment; preparation and commitment to conduct independent
scholarship consistent with a librarian appointment; capacity and commitment
to engage independently in continuing professional development. Desired:
Knowledge of organization of archival materials. Reading knowledge of
French or German.
CAMPUS AND LIBRARIES: Michigan State University
Libraries serve more than 2,000 faculty, 33,000 undergraduates and 9,000
graduate and professional students on a park-like campus of over 5,000
acres. The Main Library and 14 branch libraries have combined holdings of
over 4 million volumes. East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000
located adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.
COMPENSATION: $35,000 minimum. MSU provides generous
fringe benefits.
