The General Library of the University of California at Davis seeks =
applications for a full-time Library Information Systems Manager. The =
General Library, which is comprised of the Shields (Main) Library, the =
Carlson Health Sciences Library, and the Physical Science & Engineering =
Library on the Davis campus, and the Medical Center Library in =
Sacramento, serves the research, education, patient care and community =
service needs of its campus faculty, staff, and students.=20
The Library infrastructure is composed of 20 "enterprise" servers (VMS, =
UNIX flavors, and NT operating systems), 400 staff workstations, over =
200 public workstations and two microcomputer instructional facilities =
(38 workstations). The systems comprise a large, complex hardware =
environment that supports a primary database of over 70 gigabytes =
(bibliographic, holdings, patrons, acquisitions, text and image data), =
which run 24x7. Vendor-created applications are run for materials =
acquisitions, serials control, cataloging, circulation control, and =
supply data to the California Digital Library MELVYL Catalog and =
Periodicals databases. The Library also runs staff-specific applications =
for its internal use, and supports access mechanisms for Internet-based =
and locally mounted databases.
Responsibilities:
Under the general direction of the Assistant University Librarian for =
Sciences & Systems, the LIS Manager is responsible for management of the =
staff and systems that support the mission of the General Library =
including: Provide leadership in planning, budgeting, implementing, =
monitoring and evaluating appropriate technologic innovations. Oversee =
the Library's technology infrastructure and ensure its integrity. =
Maintain an effective team of highly skilled personnel, supervising a =
staff of approx. 14 FTE (including academic, professional, clerical and =
student employees). Foster an environment that encourages collaboration =
(both within and outside the Library) and initiatives to enhance the use =
of technology.
Qualifications:
Technology Experience: Advanced knowledge of data communications =
networks, software applications design, information processing, database =
management systems, computer architecture and national standards for a =
variety of data formats. Detailed knowledge of ANSI Z39.50 and its =
extensions, HTTP, HTTPS, HTML, SGML, XML, image-related, and TCP-related =
protocols. Substantial experience with relational database management =
systems, fourth-generation report-creation tools, and data warehouse =
principles and methodologies. Working knowledge of programming =
techniques and languages, specifically C (C++), Java, PERL, UNIX, =
Solaris Unix. Working knowledge of a broad range of computing equipment, =
including (but not limited to) microcomputers, NT and UNIX servers, =
printers, and multimedia stations. Working knowledge of a variety of =
software applications, including (but not limited to) Windows NT, =
Microsoft Office, network-based email. Demonstrated ability to keep =
current with technologic developments and to use that knowledge to make =
changes to existing systems. Familiarity with one or more of the =
following preferred: commercial integrated library systems; library =
service providers, such as Library of Congress, OCLC, RLIN (Research =
Libraries Information Network) National Library of Medicine; MARC record =
format standards; issues associated with electronic publications (e.g. =
licensing, copyright, access, publishing formats); Internet-based =
delivery and presentation of library services and collections.
Management Experience: Demonstrated ability to estimate the scope of a =
project and to bring it to completion within time and budget parameters. =
Analytical skill to evaluate complex technical problems, formulate =
options, and develop solutions. Expertise to develop cost-effective =
trouble-shooting procedures for workstations, networks, and =
infrastructure systems. Good judgment in setting priorities for =
technical staff. Demonstrated ability to develop and enhance technical =
skills of team-based staff and evaluate performance. Experience =
collaborating with technical and non-technical colleagues. Excellent =
oral communications skills to represent the Library in local, regional, =
and national arenas, present technical information to individuals and =
groups, and build good working relations. Excellent written =
communications skills to communicate with technical and non-technical =
individuals and groups, prepare persuasive and cogent proposals, and =
write clear documentation, reports, procedures, and publishable works. =
Excellent time management skills to establish and adhere to schedules. =
Ability to manage a budget without cost overruns.
