Vacancy Announcement
Assistant Head, Cataloging Department
Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer
Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and
Chapel Hill. One of the nation's premier concentrations of academic,
corporate, and public research, the area combines moderate year-round
temperatures, rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich
diversity of cultural events. While the Triangle consistently leads the
lists of desirable American communities, the North Carolina State
University Libraries has been recognized as the first recipient of the
Association of College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic
Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and continuous interaction
with students and faculty to further the educational mission of NC State
University. In the past seven years, the NCSU Libraries has made an
unprecedented rise through the ranks of the Association of Research
Libraries to its current position of 35th among the 111 member
libraries.
The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position
of Assistant Head, Cataloging Department, to help blaze the path for
library catalog and database services in the post Dublin Core era.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, shares in all aspects of management
and planning within the department, with responsibility for supervision
of one of the Department’s three Sections: Monographs,
Serials/Electronic Resources, and Database Management. The Assistant
Head assists in in-house training activities, in the development of
staff work plans, and in the annual performance appraisal process for
support staff positions. Professional staff in the department all work
on collaborative projects outside their home department, such as the
MyLibrary@NCState portal, reference work, and archival and Special
Collections activities. In the absence of the Department Head, the
Assistant Head is responsible for managing the department and
representing Cataloging on Management Council. The Assistant Head is a
member of the Collections and Technical Services Heads group, serves on
library-wide committees, task forces, and teams, and is expected to be
active professionally.
The Cataloging Department, which comprises 6 professional librarians,
18.5 support staff, and a Computing Consultant shared with Acquisitions
and Preservation, provides original and copy cataloging, authority work,
and planning for the Libraries’ DRA catalog. The NCSU Libraries
catalogs over 45,000 titles and 100,000 volumes each year, including
books, serials, audio-visual software, and e-resources using DRA
Classic, the Library of Congress classification system and LCSH.
Planning for the next-generation version of the integrated library
system has just begun and should provide an interesting challenge for
this position. Through SOLINET, Cataloging participates in preservation
microfilming activities and in OCLC through monthly batch loads. We are
also active participants in the CORC Project. In the last two years,
the Department has become involved in several non-MARC text and image
database projects in collaboration with the Digital Library Initiatives
Department and the Design Library.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. At least three years professional
cataloging experience. Demonstrated supervisory experience. Excellent
oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work
independently and in teams. Experience with an integrated library
system. Preferred: Non-English language reading facility, particularly
with modern European languages.

of Head, Design Library. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library is located
in the College of Design and serves a primary clientele of 65 faculty
and 734 students. The College of Design comprises four departments --
Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Landscape
Architecture. The curriculum supports bachelor’s and master’s degrees
in all four departments and a Ph.D. degree in Design.
Responsibilities
The Head has management and administrative responsibility for the Design
Library. Plans, develops, and delivers responsive and innovative
services. Supervises a Visual Resources Librarian, 2.5 FTE support
staff, and student assistants. Offers leadership in creating services
that incorporate new information technology into teaching, learning, and
meeting user needs. Works closely with administrators, faculty, staff,
and students in developing library collections and services. Develops
and maintains a library Web site, and provides content updates to the
MyLibrary@NCState web portal in the areas of art, architecture, and
design. Working closely with the Collection Management Department and
as a member of the Humanities and Social Sciences Subject Team, selects,
evaluates, and manages book, journal, and slide collections of the
Design Library. Leads a team from the Digital Library Initiatives and
Cataloging departments to digitize selected images from the slide
collection and provide access to the slides and images through a
structured database. Responsible for planning, budget, personnel, and
facilities management. Serves as a member of the College of Design
library committee, and the Libraries' Management Council and Public
Services Group. Participates in library-wide planning activities and is
expected to be active professionally. Reports to the Associate Director
for Public Services.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Substantial experience with print and
visual materials in architecture, art, or design. Knowledge of
applications of current and emerging technologies as they contribute to
meeting the needs of researchers and students. Excellent interpersonal
skills; evidence of effective collaboration with researchers, faculty,
and students; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and
personably, orally and in writing. Ability to work both independently
and in a team environment. Administrative or supervisory experience.
Preferred: Academic background or substantial working experience in at
least one of the subject disciplines supported by the library. Direct
experience with slide collections.

Service, invites applications and nominations for the position of
Librarian for Educational Technologies. This position serves as the
librarian team member within the Learning Technology Service (LTS), a
unit of the campus-wide Distance Education and Learning Technology
Applications organization which is located in the library. The position
also acts as a liaison and instructional technology consultant for
library staff, residing in the Digital Library Initiatives Department
half-time. The Librarian for Educational Technologies serves as the
subject specialist in educational technologies literature for both
units. Both the LTS and the Libraries are committed to providing
faculty and students with the intellectual tools and content resources
best suited for teaching and learning in a changing pedagogical
environment.
Responsibilities
Working under the leadership of the Director of the LTS, the Librarian
for Educational Technologies identifies and organizes a working
collection of information for the use of the LTS team in carrying out
its mission. Provides current awareness and research services.
Facilitates LTS efforts to advance learning technology and distance
education projects from the instructional design phase through
production, delivery, and assessment. Supports integration of
information management tools (e.g., image and multimedia databases) into
the online teaching and learning environment. Assists in stimulating
campus dialogue and interest groups related to educational technologies,
and participates in planning and delivery of faculty development
programs. Maintains awareness of intellectual property issues in
collaboration with the Scholarly Communication Center.
Under the direction of the Head, Digital Library Initiatives, trains and
supports librarians and library staff members to develop content
appropriate for N. C. State’s learning technology and distance education
environment. Demonstrates the use of digital and multimedia resources
and software tools, creates sample courseware, and serves as a liaison
between the LTS, faculty members, and librarians in all subject
specialties. Facilitates communication with the Libraries’ Distance
Learning Services Department and LTS. Participates in library planning,
serves on library-and university-wide committees, task forces, and
teams. Is active professionally and contributes to developments in
educational technology and librarianship.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in
information science or related field. Experience developing instruction
and/or training programs using Internet or multimedia authoring tools
and various digital file formats. Demonstrated ability to organize
information and provide user-centered services. Knowledge of
applications of current and emerging technologies in distance learning.
Understanding of the educational mission of a science- and
technology-focused research library and university. Excellent
interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and
personably, orally and in writing, with clients and colleagues. Ability
to work collaboratively in a team environment; ability to work
independently. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
effectively. Preferred: Two years relevant professional experience.
