The Saint Louis University Health Sciences Center Library invites
applications for the position of Assistant Director for Technical
Services. Saint Louis University, a Catholic Jesuit institution is
dedicated to education, research and health care. The Health Sciences
Center Library serves the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health,
Public Health, the Centers for Health Care Ethics and Advanced Dental
Education and the SLU Care Hospitals. The Saint Louis University Libraries
share a multi-campus integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces and
the OVID suite of databases) with the University of Missouri Library
System.
Description: Reporting to the Library Director, this position directs and
supervises the operations of the Technical Services Department: collection
development, cataloging, acquisitions and serials/binding preparation.
Responsibilities of this position include providing leadership in the
planning, organization, and evaluation of technical services; recommending
and implementing departmental policies; coordinating related budgeting and
accounting; compilation of statistical reports; maintaining the collection
and bibliographic database; supervision of copy cataloging and preparation
of minimal original cataloging; coordinating collection development
activities; recruiting, hiring, supervising, and evaluating technical
services personnel; cultivates good working relationships with the
University community and outside vendors; represents the Library in the
area of technical services at consortia meetings; and, collaborates with
the Library Director and other librarians to promote efficiency and
effectiveness of the Library.
Position requirements: Strong service orientation; excellent
problem-solving and analytical skills; excellent interpersonal skills with
the ability to lead and collaborate in a rapidly changing environment;
strong organizational skills; and knowledge of business practice. AHIP
membership is also desirable.
Qualifications: M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited library school. Five
years progressive post-MLS expertise in Technical Services (including
staff supervision), 2-4 years experience in library automation planning
and implementation, including a thorough knowledge of library computer
resources, applied knowledge of current cataloging practices, including
AACR2, MARC formats, OCLC, NLM classification, and MeSH and experience
dealing with vendors, bibliographic utilities (preferably Innovative
Interfaces) is required. Salary: $50,000.
