Subject: Macintosh printer driver
This is a point of information for Mac users who may be having trouble
locating a printer driver that works with a variety of printers.
In trying to connect a Mac with the HP ThinkJet I was introduced to a driver
called PowerPrint from GDT Softworks, Inc. According to the user manual it
supports over 850 printers.
We purchased it as an upgrade to an earlier version and the cost was
approximately $90.00. A first time purchase may be higher.
It meets our needs very well and the GDT people are easy to work with.
This is an unsolicited testimonial. It's prompted by the difficulty I had in
making the Mac/HP connection and in hopes it will save someone else some time
and trouble

Hi, Walt,
I think your question is a legitimate one. And I am not a "technological
expert" to give an authorized answer here. :-) Let me try.
In my understanding, the crt resolution is measured by the capacity of the
signals which are processed in the video controller and then sent to the
screen via the eletronic gun (sorry, I don't know the terminology here and
something I will mentioned later.) The signals are processed by rows and
colunms. The more rows and columns it can handle, the higher resolution
the monitor will have. Meanwhile, a good monitor needs a higher resolution
video card to support it in order to materialize the higher resolution.
On the other hand, on the front of screen, there is some specific material
that will reflect the signals and light up. So you see dots on the screen
composing the pattern for you. The size of the dots are measured by pitch.
The size of dots depend on many factors, include the quality of the reflect
materials, and the concentrization (sp?) of the electronic signals, etc.
The larger the dots would be, the bigger the pitch is. A good monitor
should have a fine pitch, that is, a smaller pitch.
So, what would happened when the pitch is large and resolution is high?
Well, the "eletronic gun" will still produce that much signals. The screen
will receive more signals that can distribute so one dot will be overlapped
with another dot. You see that the monitor is working under a higher
resolution than it pitch can permit actually. But the screen will fill of
"glares" and overally the screen will look more "fuzzy" than a lower
resolution.
The conclusion is, 14" monitor is capable to have 1024x768 resolution. But
don't rely on this size of screen if you want to have real 1024x768
resolution.
