Wayne State University Library System
Systems Librarian
Wayne State University Library System (WSULS) seeks candidates with
credentials to qualify for the rank of Librarian I/II/or III for a
full-time position as a Systems Librarian. WSULS seeks a
service-oriented individual who will provide creative, dynamic
leadership and envision future trends to advance the Libraries'
innovative technological presence. Reporting to the Assistant Director
for Systems, the Systems Librarian heads the "Digital Library Team"
(DLT), a team of 3 IT staff in a collegial environment, overseeing their
work and fostering an environment that encourages creativity,
professional development, and team work.
The DLT, working closely with the Computer Support Team, is dedicated to
a user-centered philosophy, shared authority and responsibility, and
working with a diverse group of colleagues and library customers.
Together the teams provide vision and direction in library information
systems to the WSULS organization. We support existing systems and
technologies and introduce new technologies to facilitate learning and
research, foster self-sufficiency, and assure access to electronic
information according to library priorities.

Purdy/Kresge, Science and Engineering, Shiffman Medical, and the Neef

Responsibilities
Manage a team of 3 FTE IT professionals who together are responsible for
the delivery of digital resources and electronic services through the
Library Systems websites and the Libraries' integrated library system
(IM@GINE).
Serve as the technical project leader in making WSULS local collections
(Information Hub projects) digitally accessible.
Have a leadership role in developing and delivering training,
documentation, and instructional packages related to digital resources,
electronic services, and the integrated library system for WSULS faculty
and staff.
Works with library and campus-wide groups and collaborates with faculty,
students, and computing colleagues.
Participates in library planning, serves on library-wide committees,
task forces, and teams and is expected to be active professionally.
Serves as DALNET Project Manager for the integrated library system.
Qualifications
Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school;
experience with relational databases, specifically Sybase and SQL;
knowledge of MARC; experience with Z39.50; experience with OCLC;
experience in the development of digital collections; demonstrated
supervisory skills; teaching ability; excellent verbal and written
communication skills; excellent analytical, organizational and
interpersonal skills; evidence of customer services orientation and
credentials to qualify for a Librarian I, II or III classification with
the University Library System.
Qualifications for a Librarian I Rank:
* Entry-level position (minimum requirements).
Qualifications for a Librarian II Rank:
* Demonstrated ability to carry out competently the range of
professional library functions pertaining to the primary assigned area
of librarianship.
* Evidence of the ability to work well independently, to make sound
decisions and to have constructive/productive interaction with
colleagues.
* Potential for continuing professional growth.
Qualifications for a Librarian III Rank:
* Excellence in job performance and professional achievement, e.g.,
identifiable contributions to the development of librarianship in terms
of the services and activities of a particular library or of libraries
in general.
* Appointment at this level is based on the applicant's cumulative
professional record rather than on any single accomplishment.
* Must have achieved recognition within he profession; public service
which benefits the profession or the community is also considered
important.
* Preferred: Experience with Horizon; cataloging experience; knowledge
of AACR2 rev, LC rule interpretations and LC practices; knowledge of
relevant digital library standards, including EAD, TEI, SGML, HTML, XML,
and Dublin Core; knowledge of relevant Internet delivery technologies;
participation in, or knowledge of, key digital library organizations and
associations at the regional, national, and international level.
Salary and Benefits
Salary: Negotiable. 22 days vacation per year, university holidays and
excellent fringe benefits including TIAA/CREF or Fidelity, tuition
