ANNOUNCEMENT OF LIBRARY VACANCY
TITLE: Systems Librarian I or II LIB 26
DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Assistant Director for Systems and Technical
Services, the systems librarian provides leadership in technical and access
issues related to electronic services and resources. The librarian is
responsible for supporting, designing and organizing access to electronic
Library materials, including purchased databases, the online catalog, and
other digital resources. Primary responsibilities include: identification,
evaluation, and implementation of new technologies for public service
delivery, including new ways to provide electronic reference; problem
solving, including support for standalone and networked computers in public
spaces; computing support for special projects; software evaluation;
consultation and support for distance learning and digitization programs.
The librarian will work collaboratively with the University Computer Lab
Library Support Team; be the primary systems liaison to Public Services,
particularly in relation to technical support of electronic resources and
user interfaces; and also work closely with other Library divisions. May
supervise technical support staff, participate in library instruction,
reference activities, or other Library assignments.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required for Librarian I: ALA-accredited MLS; excellent
interpersonal and communication skills; excellent problem-solving abilities;
ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff; ability to
work in a team environment and delegate effectively; ability to work in a
dynamic and changing environment; an understanding of network-related
service issues; knowledge of the Web and HTML; preparation and commitment to
do independent scholarship consistent with a librarian appointment; capacity
and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional
development.
Required for Librarian II: Same as above with 3 years of experience as a
librarian, including experience in an academic library systems department or
with a library automation vendor.
Desired: Experience with graphic design and design tools; a working
knowledge of operating system management, preferably for MS-Windows, NT, or
LINUX; some programming language experience; public services experience.
CAMPUS AND LIBRARIES: Michigan State University Libraries serve more than
4,000 faculty and academic staff, 34,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate
and professional students on a park-like campus of over 5,000 acres. The
Main Library and 14 branch libraries have combined holdings of over 4
million volumes. East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000
located adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.
COMPENSATION: Minimum salary is $35,000. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
provides generous fringe benefits.
