I tell 'em the tory of the introduction of the telephone to college campuses
around the tunr of the century up to about 1930. There was a great deal of
hostility and suspision about phones on campuses. It was thought that
professors would cut their office o hours, rich students with phones
would have advantages over poor ones without, that it would lead to sloppy
scholarship, that lazy people would use the telephones rather than visit
face-to-face.
I then introduce them to the 'net, the equivalent of the turn-of-the-
century telephone., As with any analogy, it only goes so far, but it
is a nice reminder that change is not just new, but is also old.
