Request for In-depth Testers of
Classification Web
The Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) of the Library of Congress is
seeking in-depth testers for a Pilot test of Classification Web, a service
offering online access to the LC Classification files. The test will take
place over a three-month period, beginning January 8, 2001 and ending March
30, 2001.
The Classification Web Pilot will contain all approved LC classification
schedules as of January 1, 2001. This includes A, B-BJ, BR-BX, C, DS-DX,
E-F, H, J, K, KT tables, KD, KE, KF, KDZ, KG-KH, KJ-KKZ, KK-KKC, KJV-KJW,
KZ, L, M, N, P-PA, PB-PH, PJ-PK, PN, PQ, PT, PR-PS & PZ, P-PTZ Tables, Q, R,
S, T, U-V, and Z. Files will be updated weekly.
Requirements for being an in-depth tester:
1. Be an institution that uses LC Classification to classify library
materials and preferably also LC Subject Headings.
2. Has access to a Netscape browser version 4.x or Microsoft Explorer
browser version 5.x or higher at participating staff workstations.
3. Be willing to use the Pilot service as part of regular work processes for
the period of the three-month test.
4. Be willing to complete 3 interim and one final Web-based questionnaire.

5. Institutions that have reference as well as technical service staff
willing to test the product.
6. Willingness to participate in a one-time “stress test” where as many
users as possible log on at one time.
7. Sites outside North America that use LC Classification are particularly
encouraged to apply to assure proportionate feedback regarding access and
response times.
It is CDS’s intent is to gather a representative group of testers to assess
ease of use of service features, system dependability and response time,
viability as both a reference and a technical services tool, and interest in
Classification Web as a potential subscription-based product.
The Classification Web Pilot will be available to all interested parties who
sign on to the product Web site, but in-depth testers will have extended
access to the complete data set beyond the conclusion of the test and
receive a 20% discount on purchase of the production service or their choice
of print Classification schedules of equivalent value.
